Pillars of Umrah and Wajib of Umrah

Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, Today’s topic of discussion is how many and what are the Farz of Umrah and how many and what are the Wajib of Umrah. The literal meaning of Umrah is a pilgrimage. Umrah in terms of Shariah means pilgrimage to Baitullah Sharif through certain actions such as Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and shaving the head or cutting the hair short.

Pillars of Umrah

Umrah has three obligations. Namely:-

1. Tying Ihram

2. Performing tawaf

3. Performing Safa-Marwa Sai

1. Tying Ihram

Intending to put on Ihram. A person who does not intend to perform Umrah will not perform Umrah. The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Verily, actions are dependent on intentions.” And to each one will be what he decides.

Bukhari: 1

2. Performing tawaf

Tawaf of Baitullah. Allah Ta’ala says, And let them perform Tawaf of the ancient house.

Hajj: 29

3. Performing Safa-Marwa Sai

Saying between Safa and Marwa. Regarding the obligatory Sa’i of Safa and Marwa, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “And whoever among you has not brought a Hadee should perform Tawaf of the Baytullah and Sa’i of Safa and Marwa.”

Bukhari: 1691; Muslim 1227

Moreover, he also said about Sa’i, “Do Sa’i, because Allah has made Sa’i obligatory upon you.”

Musnad Ahmad: 6/421; Mustadarak Hakem: 4/70.

So if one does not intend to wear Ihram, then his Umrah will not be performed. Although he performs Tawaf, Sai. Likewise, if one does not perform Tawaf or Sai, then his Umrah will not be performed. He will remain in Ihram until he performs Tawaf and Sa’i. In such a situation, he should be in Ihram without having short hair or shaving his head.

Wajib of Umrah

There are two obligations of Umrah. Namely:-

1. Tying Ihram from Meekat

2. Shaving the head or cutting all the hair short.

1. Tying Ihram from Meekat

A. For those who stay outside the Miqat, Ihram is tied from the Miqat through which he enters. Because the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said when determining the Meeqaats, these are for those and those who come that way from other places with the intention of performing Hajj and Umrah.

Bukhari: 1524; Muslim: 1181.

b. For those staying in Makkah, Ihram is worn from outside the Hill i.e. the Haram area. Because the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, ordered Aisha to wear Ihram from Tan’eem.

Bukhari: 1561; Muslim: 1211.

Tan’eem is located outside Haram. For Umrah pilgrims staying in Makkah, it is the nearest Meeqaat, the place of Ihram for Umrah.

c. Those who stay inside the Miqat but outside the Haram, area will put on the Ihram of Umrah from their respective places. Because the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, And those who stay inside the Miqat will put on Ihram from wherever they wish (for Hajj or Umrah).

Bukhari: 1524; Muslim: 1181.

2. Shaving the head or cutting all the hair short

Shaving the head or cutting the hair short. Because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded to shave his head or cut his hair short, saying that he should cut his hair short and become lawful.

Bukhari: 1691; Muslim: 1227.
