Dua after Adhan and answer of Azan in Arabic and English

Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, Rasool (PBUH) said, When you hear the Mu’azzin giving the call to prayer, say what he says. Then recite Durood on me. Because, whoever recites Darood on me once, Allah Ta’ala showers mercy on him ten times in return. Then ask Allah for help for me. Because ‘Wasilah’ is an honorable place in Paradise. It will be given to one of Allah’s servants. I hope I will be that servant. (My) mediation will become obligatory for the one who asks Allah for intercession for me. (Sahih Muslim Hadith No. 735)

From the above hadith, we understand that after hearing the adhan we should say what the muezzin says in response to the adhan. Then reciting the durood on Rasool (PBUH). Then pray for the Prophet (PBUH). And doing these is Sunnah for us. The dua that Rasulullah (SAW) taught us to pray for Osilaah is known as the Dua of Adhan. Below is a discussion about the answer to the call to prayer and the prayers of the call to prayer.

Correct Rules and Virtues of Responding to Azan

In response to the muezzin’s call to prayer, the listeners will say what the muezzin says. However, in the case of two Hayyas ‘Ala (لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ) will say “la-hawla wala-quywata illa-billah-h”. And it is in the hadith narrated by Umar (RA). And when the muezzin says اَلصَّلَاةُ خَيْرُ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ during the Fajr call, there is no proof of saying صَدَّقْتَ وَبَرَرْتَ.

Hadith No. 1

On the authority of Umar Ibn al-Khattab (RA):

He said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When the Muwazzin says “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar”, one of you sincerely replies: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar”. When the Muawizzin says: “Ashhadu al-la-ila-ha illall-ha” in response he also says: “Ashhadu al-la-ila-ha illall-ha”. Then the Mu’awizzin said: Ashhadu Anna Muhammadan Rasoolullaah.” In response, he said: “Ashhadu Anna Muhammadan Rasoolullaah.” Then the Mu’awizzin says: “Hayya ‘alas sala-h” in response says: “La-hawla wala-quwwata illa billa-h”. And then the Mu’awizzin says: “Hayya ‘alal fala-h” in response he says: “La-hawla wala-quwwata illa billa-h”. Then the Muawizzin said: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar” in response he said: “Allahu Akbar, Allah-hu Akbar”. Then the Muawizzin says: “La-ila-ha illal-ha” in response he says: “La-ila-ha illall-ha”. He will go to heaven because of this answer to the call to prayer.

Exaggeration in the dua and answer of Adhan

A few things are introduced in response to the call to prayer, which should be avoided. Because, Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam has sternly warned: “Whoever deliberately lies in my name, he has made his abode in hell.” (Bukhari, Mishkat 198 ‘Ilam chapter)

(1) At the end of this hadith, ‘Innaka la Tukhliful Mi’ad.

(2) ‘Allahumma inni as-aluka bi haqqi ha-jihid da’wa’at at the beginning of two and a half of the adhan described in Bayhaqee (Volume 1, p. 410).

(3) Narrated in Imam Tahavi’s Sharhu Ma’anil Asar ‘A-ti Sayyidina Muhammadan.

(4) Wad Darajatar Rafi’ah in Ibnus Sunni’s book ‘Fi ‘Amalil Yawmi Wal Laylah’.

(5) “Ya Arhamar Ra-himeen” is described at the end of the Dua of Azaan in Al Muharri’s book by Rafi’s. The additional matters common to the answer to the call to prayer must be waived.

The additional words are not attested by Sahih sources. (Muhaddis Shaykh Naseeruddin Al-Albani in ‘Irwail Galil, Volume 1, Pages 260-261, Hadith No. 243)

(6) There is no basis for adding the phrase ‘waryukna sha’atahu yaomal qiyamah’ broadcast by radio and Bangladesh television.

(7) When the muezzin says اَلصَّلَاةُ خَيْرُ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ during the Fajr call, there is no proof of saying صَدَّقْتَ وَبَرَرْتَ.
