Islamic rules of wife intercourse

To clear the intention

Intending to prevent oneself from the haram path, to increase the number of the Muslim Ummah, and to gain reward through the act. Abu Jaar agreed to this. In a hadith narrated from

Intercourse with wife is also charity. They said, Ya Rasulullah! If someone has intercourse with his wife, will he be rewarded? He said, Do you think that if he commits adultery in a forbidden way, it will not be a sin for him? Similarly, if he commits adultery in a lawful way, he will be rewarded. (Muslim 2001)

Caressing during intercourse

Kissing, hugging, beating, etc. during sexual intercourse. In the hadith,

كان رسول الله ﷺ يُلاعبُ أهله ، ويُقَبلُها

Rasulullah ﷺ used to hug, and kiss, etc. his wife. (Jadul Ma’ad 4/253)

Reciting dua while starting intercourse

بِسْمِ اللّهِ اللّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ وَ جَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا

Starting in the name of Allah, O Allah! Keep us away from Shaytan and keep away Shaytan from what You bestow upon us.’

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “After that, if some fruit is given between the two of them or a child is born, Satan will never be able to harm him.” (Bukhari 4787)

The Position of Cohabitation in Islam

Allah Ta’ala says, Your wives are a field for you. Use them as you wish. (Surah Al Baqarah 223).

That is, do as you wish; Front side and backside. But it should be done vaginally and not anally.

And there are many hadiths about this. Two references seem sufficient.

The first hadith

On the authority of Jabir (RA), he said, The Jews say that if a husband has intercourse with his wife from her back to her front, then the child will be tara. Then “Your wives are a field for you. Use them as you will” (Surah Al-Baqarah 223) this verse was revealed. The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, then said, It can be done both in front and behind if it is a place of shame.

Bukhari 8/15, Muslim 4/156, Nasa’i 76/1-2

The second hadith

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA). He said this tribe of Ansari idolaters used to live with this tribe of Jewish people of the books. And the Ansar followed the Jews in many respects in terms of knowledge, And it was a habit of the People of the Book that they had intercourse with their wives only on one side. And the wife was covered by him the most. So this group of Ansar took over the work of the Jews. And the Quraysh used to expose their women in the worst way and enjoy them by fronting, rearing, and screaming.

Then when the Muhajirs arrived in Medina, a Quraysh man married an Ansari woman. He acted according to their rules to his wife. But the woman thought it was bad and said, We are made to have intercourse only on one side. So you do it or stay away from me. Even his affair took a great shape. Finally, the news reached the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace. Then Allah revealed this verse. “Your wives are for you a field, which you can use as you wish” (Surah Al-Baqarah 223) ie, forward, backward, and shout. The main purpose is to have a child by himself.

Abu Dawud 1/137, Hakim 2/195/279; Bayhaqi 7/195

Prohibition of intercourse

Anal intercourse is forbidden

According to the meaning of Quranic verses and hadiths, sexual intercourse with the wife’s buttocks is forbidden.

Almighty Allah says, Your wives are like your fields, so you can have intercourse as you wish. (Surah Al Baqarah 223).

And there are many hadiths about this.

The first hadith

Narrated by Umm Salama (RA). He said, when the Muhajirs came to the Ansar in Madinah, they married their women. And the Muhajir women were chaste, but the Ansari women were not chaste. Once a Muhajir made such a wish to his Ansari wife, but she refused to do so until he asked Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him). Umm Salama said, That woman came to the Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, but was shy to ask. So Umm Salamah asked her, then the verse “Your wives are for you fields, which you may use as you wish” (Surah Al-Baqarah 223) was revealed. He said no, only intercourse on the same street.

Musnad Ahmad (pp. 6/305/310-318). Tirmidhi (3/75 p.). He also called it Sahih and narrated by Abu Yala (329/1) p., Ibn Abi Hatim in his Tafseer Muhammadiyah (39/1) p., and Imam Bayhaqi (7/195) p. And his Sanad is Sahih according to the conditions of Muslims.

The second hadith

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA). He said, Once Umar bin Khattab (RA) came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). Then he said, O Messenger of God! I am destroyed. The Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, What destroyed you? He said I changed my ride at night. The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, did not give any answer. Then this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him: “Your wives are for you a field, which you may use as you wish” (Surah Al-Baqarah 223). He said, Do forwards and backward, and avoid hips and menstruation.

Narrated by Nasa’i al-Ishra 76/2, Tirmidhi (2/162-Bulak edition) Ibn Abi Hatim (39/1) p., Tabrani (3/156/2) and Wahidi (53) p. Hasan Saad. And Imam Tirmidhi called him Hasan.

The third hadith

On the authority of Khuzaimah bin Thabit (RA), a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about having intercourse with a woman’s buttocks, or about a man having intercourse with a woman’s buttocks. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied that it is valid. Then when he wanted to go back, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, called him. Or he was ordered to be called, so he was called. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “How did you say?” On any two holes back to front yes it is legal, no back to back, no not legal. Surely Allah is not ashamed of Haqq. You shall not have sexual relations with the buttocks of women.

Imam Shafi’i (2/260), Bayhaqi (7/196) pages, Darimi (1/145) pages and Tahabi (2/25) pages, Imam Khattabi Gharibul Hadith (73/2) pages.

The fourth hadith

Allah will look upon the one who lies on his wife’s buttocks.

Nasa’i al-Israh (2/77-78/1) pages, Tirmidhi (1/218) pages, Ibn Hibban (1302) pages, from the hadith of Ibn Abbas.

The fifth hadith

Cursed is the man who has intercourse with a women’s buttocks.

Narrated by Ibn Adi (211/1) from the hadith of Uqbah bin Amir in Hasan Sanad. Abu Dawud (2162) No. and Ahmad (2/444 and 479) pp.

The sixth hadith

Whoever has intercourse with the buttocks of a menstruating woman or comes to an astrologer, then takes his word as true, then he has denied what was revealed to Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace.

Arbah in Sunan except for Nasa’i i.e. Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Imam Nasa’i al-Ishra (page 78), Daremi and Ahmad (2/408 and 476).

Prohibited time of intercourse

Intercourse with a menstruating woman is forbidden

It is forbidden for the husband to have intercourse with his wife during her period. Almighty Allah says:

And they ask you about your period. Say it is impure or painful, so refrain from having sex while you are menstruating. Do not approach them until they are purified. When they are thoroughly purified, approach them as Allah has commanded you. Surely Allah loves those who repent and abstain from impurity. (Surah Al Baqarah 222)

And there are many hadiths about this.

The first hadith

Sayings of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam:

If a man has intercourse with a menstruating woman or on her buttocks or approaches an astrologer and finds what he says to be true, then he has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.

Narrated by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, and others. Hadith is authentic.

Having intercourse with a menstruating woman is her expiation

It is obligatory upon the one whose mind is dominated by desire and then has intercourse with a menstruating woman before she is purified from menstruation, that she should give charity of about half a pound or a quarter of a pound of gold in English.

On the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) on the authority of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said about the person who had sexual intercourse with his wife while menstruating, he will give a gold coin of one dinar or a gold coin of half a dinar in charity.

Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i and Ibn Majah, Tabrani al-Mu’zamul Kabir (3/14/1 and 146/1 and 148/2) pp. and Ibn al-Arabi al-Mu’zam (15/1 and 49/1) Narrated in a Sahih Sanad in proportion to the conditions of Pagja and Daremi, Hakim and Baihaqi Bukhari.

What is lawful for the husband with Menstruation

It is permissible for the husband to share pleasure with anything other than the genitals of the menstruator. There are many hadiths in this regard.

The first hadith

Sayings of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam:

Do everything except intercourse with them.

Sahih Muslim, Sahih Abu Awana, Sahih Abu Dawud Hadith No. 250.

The second hadith

Narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He said, “When one of us was menstruating, the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, would order him to wear a Tahband or lungi.” Then he used to associate with his wife. Aisha once said he used to touch her.

In Nihayat (he wishes to be touched by Mubashara. And its original meaning is touching or joining of a man’s body with a woman’s. And sometimes comes to mean intercourse in and out of the pubic area).

Here the second meaning from that is the intention which is manifest. And this is what Aisha (RA) said. Shahba bint Karim said I said to Ayesha, what is valid for the wife during menstruation for her husband? He said everything is lawful except intercourse. Ibn Sa’id (8/485) pg. And the same has been authentically narrated on the authority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) regarding the fasting person, And his discussion is in the first volume of Ahadith Sahih (pages 220 and 221). And Bukhari, Muslim, and Abu Awana narrated the hadith in their Sahihs and Abu Dawud in his book, and Abu Dawud’s wording (260) is a Sahih source.

The third hadith

On the authority of one of the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings are upon him, who said, When the Prophet, peace, and blessings of God be upon him, desired something with a menstruating woman, he used to cover her private parts and then do whatever he desired.

Imam Abu Dawud narrated the hadith in his book (262). And the narration is his, his Sanad is Saheeh according to the conditions of Muslims and Ibn Abdil Hadi called it Saheeh, and Ibn Hajar and Baihaqi (1/314) strengthened it on pg. And the excess is his.

It is permissible to have intercourse with a wife when she is pure

Allah Almighty says, When they attain purity, then approach them as Allah has commanded you. Surely Allah loves those who repent and attain purity. (Surah Al-Baqarah 222)

When the wife is pure from menstruation and the bleeding has stopped, it is permissible for the husband to have intercourse with her only after washing the spot of blood or performing ablution, or after taking a bath. In other words, it is permissible to have intercourse with one of them.

And that is Ibn Hazm’s madhhab which is in his book (10/81) page. He narrated from Ata and Qatada. They say that when the menstruating woman observes chastity, she will wash her private parts and her husband will have intercourse with her. And this is the madhhab of the pilgrims. As in Bidayatul Mujtahid (1/44) pg. Ibn Hazm said I narrated from Ata that when a woman sees purity and performs ablution, it is permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her. This is about Abu Sulaiman and all our companions. And what is mentioned by Ata is in Ibn Abi Shayba’s Musannaf (1/66) pg; And on the authority of Ibnul Munzeer, Mujahid and Ata, they said, if he sees signs of purity, then there is no harm in purifying him with water. (and her husband may have intercourse with her before bathing) Shaukani mentions him (1/202) on p.

Intercourse while fasting is forbidden

Meaning: It is permissible for you to go to your wives during the night of fasting. They are clothes for you and you are clothes for them. Allah knows that you were betraying yourselves. Then He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So, join them now and seek what Allah has written for you. And eat and drink until the white line of dawn is clear from the black line. Then complete the fast till night. And you do not associate with wives in the Masjid while performing Itikafar. This is Allah’s boundary, so do not approach it. This is how Allah makes His verses clear to people so that they adopt taqwa. (Baccarat-187)

Intercourse while fasting is forbidden. However, during the month of Ramadan, intercourse can be done at night. Intercourse during the day is prohibited. If someone commits sexual intercourse intentionally, he must repent and perform expiation.

Intercourse during Ittikaaf is forbidden
It is forbidden to have sex while wearing Ihram during Hajj
It is forbidden to have sexual intercourse with the wife for 40 days after her abortion

Sex can be done at any time other than the above times. In this case, intercourse can be done during the full moon, new moon, daytime, Friday, Eid day, Eid night, Shab Barat, Shab Qadr night, etc. and it is valid or halal. There will be no harm or sin in it.

Intercourse during pregnancy

Intercourse during pregnancy is not prohibited in Islam. However, many people hesitate to have intercourse during pregnancy. Many women also worry about whether their unborn child will suffer any harm due to intercourse. But if a pregnant woman does not face any penalty then there is no problem with intercourse with her.

Abdominal pain and uterine bleeding are normal during pregnancy. So these things should be observed. In addition, during this time, many women’s desire for intercourse decreases. So the wife should refrain from forcing sex without her will.

Rules of intercourse with wife in Ramadan

Having sex during the day while fasting breaks the fast, so sex can be had at any time from the beginning of Iftar to Sehri. However, it is permissible for husband and wife to sleep side by side, caress, kiss, breaststroke, etc. during the days of Ramadan. But it must be without ejaculation. It is not permissible for the husband and wife who are observing the obligatory fast to do anything that causes ejaculation. There are some people who ejaculate quickly. In the case of such a person, he should be careful not to kiss, or hug, etc. his wife during the obligatory fast.

Wudu between two intercourses

If the husband has sexual intercourse with his wife in a lawful place and intends to have sexual intercourse a second time, then he will perform ablution in accordance with the saying of the Prophet, peace, and blessings be upon him.

If one of you has intercourse with his wife, then desires her again, then he should perform ablution between them. In another narration, perform ablution like the ablution of prayer because it is more refreshing for the second time.

Muslim (1/171) pages, Ibn Abi Shaiba (1/51/2) pages, Ahmad (3/28) pages, Abu Na’im (2/12/1)

Ghusl is best between two intercourses

Ghusl is better than ablution according to the Hadith of Raf.

Indeed, once the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, had intercourse with his wives. He bathed near it and also bathed near it. Rabi said I said to him, O Messenger of Allah! Couldn’t you turn him into a ghoul? He said, “It is cleaner, better, and purer.”

Abu Dawud and Nasa’i Isratun Nisa (79/1), Tabrani (6/96/1)

Husband and wife shower together

It is permissible for husband and wife to take bath together in one place. Although they see each other. And there are many hadiths about this.

The first hadith

On the authority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said, “I and the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, were both taking ablution from the same vessel.” Both of our hands collided with hers. He would hurry before me, even I would say keep for me, keep for me. Aisha said both were impure.

Narrated by Imam Bukhari, Muslim, and Abu Awana in their Sahih books.

The second hadith

On the authority of Muawiyah bin Haida. He said I said, O Messenger of God! Which of our shames should we cover and which should we expose? He said, “Keep your private parts apart from your wives and maids.” He said I said, O Messenger! What if some of them are in between? He said, “If one is capable of not seeing the place of shame, then let no one see it.” He said I said? O Messenger of God! What if any of us are uncovered? He said Allah is more entitled than people to feel shame.

Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Nasa’i Isratun Nisa (76/1) pages, Musnad Ruani (27/169/1-2) pages, Ahmad (5/3-4) pages, Baihaqi (1/199) pages.

Performing impurity ablutions before sleeping

Both husband and wife will sleep after ablution. There are many hadiths about this.

The first hadith

Narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). He said, If the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, wanted to eat or sleep while impure, he would wash his private parts and perform ablution as in prayer.

Bukhari, Muslim, and Abu Awana narrated them in Sahih.

The second hadith

Narrated by Ibn Umar (RA). Umar (RA) said, O Messenger of God! Can any of us sleep in an unclean state? He said yes if he performs ablution. Another narration says you perform ablution and wash your penis then sleep. In another narration, yes, he should perform ablution. Then let him sleep and bathe whenever he wants. Another description says yes. And if he wants to perform ablution.

Narrated by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Nasa’i in Sahih sources, Ibn Asaqi (13/223/2) p.

The third hadith

On the authority of Ammar bin Yasir, the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “The angels do not come near three persons.” The body of a disbeliever and the user of perfumes such as chalk are impure until he performs ablution.

Narrated by Abu Dawud (2/192/193) from two sources and Ahmad, Tahabi, and Baihaqi from one source. And Tirmidhi and others called it Sahih.

Ruling on ablution for sexual intercourse

It is not obligatory. Rather, it is Muakkadah in the Sunnah in view of the hadith of Umar (RA).

Umar (RA) asked the Messenger of Allah (SAW), “Can any of us sleep in an impure state?” He said, Yes, and asked if he wanted to perform ablution.

Imam Ibn Hibban quoted from Usataaz Ibn Khuzaimah in his (Sahih) book (232 pages).

And it is strengthened by the hadith of Aisha (RA).

On the authority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said, The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to sleep in impurity without touching any water; He would even wake up later and take a shower.

Ibn Abi Shayba (1/45/1), Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Nasa’i Isratun Nisa (79-80) pp., Tahabi, Tayalisi and Ahmad and Baghabi hadith of Ali bin Jad (9/85/1 and 11/ 114/2) pp. Musnad Abu Yala (224/2) and Baihaqi and Hakim say Sahih.

It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to spend the night in impurity, then Belal would come to him and inform him of the prayer. Then he would get up and take a bath. And I looked at the water coming out of his head. Then he would go out to the mosque and I would listen to his voice in Fajr prayer. After that, he was in a state of fasting. Rabi Mutarraf said I said to Amir, what is in the month of Ramadan? He said, Yes, it would have been the same in the month of Ramadan or in any other month.

On the authority of Imam Ibn Abi Shaiba Sha’bi on the authority of Masrook, on the authority of Aisha (2/173/2) pp. Sanad Sahih. Ahmad (6/101 and 254) pages, Musnad Abu Yala (224/1) pages.

Performing tayammum on an impure person instead of ablution

According to Aisha’s hadith, Tayammum is sometimes permissible for both of them instead of ablution. he said

And Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated on the authority of Ibn Abbas in a Hasan Sanad, he said, If a person has intercourse, then desires it again, there is no fault in delaying the ghusl.

The authority of Saeed Ibn Musayyab, said, If the impure person wishes, he should sleep before performing ablution. The Sanad of this hadith is sahih. And this is Jamhur’s Madhhab.

When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was impure and wanted to sleep, he would perform ablution or tayammum.

Baihaqi (1/200) p., on the authority of Isam bin Ali on the authority of Hisham, on the authority of his father on the authority of Aisha (RA). Hafiz Ibn Hajar Fathul Bari (1/313) Page (116) Sanad Hasan said.

Bath is obligatory after sexual intercourse

Ghusl is obligatory on both husband and wife if they have intercourse. In the case of intercourse between husband and wife, if the penis enters the private parts of the wife, then both of them will be required to perform a ghusl. It may or may not ejaculate; Both have to take bath.

Narrated Abu Huraira (RA): The Prophet (PBUH) said: If a man sits between the four branches of his wife and has intercourse with her, then Ghusl becomes obligatory on him. (Bukhari: 291)

It is better to take bath before sleeping

According to the hadith of Abdullah bin Qais, it is better to bathe both of them before going to sleep.

On the authority of Abdullah bin Qais. He said I asked Aisha (RA), what did the Prophet (PBUH) do when he was impure? Did he take a bath before sleeping, or sleep before taking a bath? Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said she used to do both. Sometimes he would bathe and then sleep, and sometimes he would perform ablution and then sleep. I said, All praise is due to Allah alone, who is generous in deeds.

Muslim (1/171) pages, Abu Awana (1/278) pages, Ahmad (6/73 and 149) pages.

Validity of arbitration

It is lawful for the husband to remove his semen from his wife, i.e. divorce. There are many hadiths about this.

The first hadith

Narrated from Jabir (RA). He said, (When the Qur’an was revealed, we used to cast off our semen from our wives during sexual intercourse).

In another narration, we used to make Azal at the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, then this news reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he did not forbid us.

Bukhari (9/250) page, Muslim (4/160) page The second narration is by Muslim. Imam Nasa’i Ishratun Nisa (82/1) page and Tirmidhi (2/193), Baghbi Ali Bin Zad’s Hadith (8/76/2) page.

The second hadith

Narrated by Abu Saeed Khudri. He said, “A man came to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘I have a slave girl, and I have adultery with her, and I do whatever the man wishes. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “The Jews have lied. The Jews have lied. If Allah wills to create something, you cannot prevent it from happening.”

Nasa’i Ishratun Nisa (81/1-2) pages, Abu Dawud (1/238 pages), Tahabi al-Mushkil’s (2/371 pages), Tirmidhi (2/193) pages, Ahmad (3/33 and 51 and 53) in the Sahih Charter.

And there is evidence for it from the hadith of Abu Huraira, narrated by Abu Yala (page 284/1) and Bayhaqi (page 7/230) in Hasan Sanad.

The third hadith

On the authority of Jabir (RA), a man came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and said: I have a maidservant who is our nurse and who waters our date garden. And I have sex with her and I hate that she will get pregnant. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, (If you wish, marry her. For what is written in her destiny will come to her womb). The man stayed for some time. Then the Prophet came to the Prophet and said, “Surely the maid has conceived.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, (I certainly gave you the news that she will soon conceive what is destined for her.

Muslim (4/160) pages, Abu Dawud (1/339) pages, Bayhaqi (7/229) pages, and Ahmad (3/312/386) pages.

It is better to abandon Azal

There are many reasons why it is better to leave the marriage.

1st Cause: Because the woman’s pleasure runs away, the woman is afflicted.

2nd Reason: Certainly, some purpose of marriage in Azal is defeated. And that is to increase the progeny of the Ummah of our Prophet, peace, and blessings are upon him.

In this regard, the words of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, are: Marry a woman who is affectionate and gives more children. For I will be proud of you in the majority with the former.

Abu Dawud (1/320) page, Nasa’i (2/71) page, and Hakim (2/162) page said Saheeh.

That is why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) compared it to secret killing.

Narrated by Muslim (4/161) pages and Tahabi Mushkilul Asar (2/370-371) pages, Ahmad (6/361 and 434) pages, Bayhaqi (7/231) pages on the authority of Saeed bin Abu Ayyub. He said, “Aqul Aswad narrated the hadith to me on the authority of Ur’ah, he on the authority of Aisha, and he on the authority of Khuzamah bint Wahhab.

And that is why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) indicated in the hadith of Abu Saeed Khudri (RA) that it is better to let him go.

On the authority of Abu Saeed Khudri (R.A.), he said, “Azal was discussed with the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace.” He said, why do any of you? And He did not say that none of you should do it. Because there is no such created soul that Allah does not create.

In another narration, then he said, Do you surely do that, do you surely do that, do you surely do that, until the Day of Resurrection, the creation that will come into existence will surely come into existence.

Narrated by Muslim (4/158 and 159) p., Nasa’i Ishratun Nisa (82/1) p., Ibn Mandah at-Tawheed (60/2) p.1 with the first narration and Bukhari (9/251/252) p.2 with the second narration.
