Rules and virtues of fasting in the month of Shawwal

Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, today’s topic of discussion is the rules and virtues of fasting in the month of Shawwal.

Virtues of fasting in the month of Shawwal

Narrated Abu Ayyub (RA): Rasulullah (SAW) said: Whoever fasts six times in the month of Shawwal after fasting the month of Ramadan, it is equivalent to fasting the whole year. (Ibn Majah 1716)

Rules for fasting in the month of Shawwal

The 6 fasts of Shawwal will be fulfilled even if you keep them separately with a break instead of continuously. If someone fasts continuously, it will be fulfilled. Because in any narration of hadith, there is no condition about keeping the 6 fasts of Shawwal together.

In short, this fast can be performed at any time of the month of Shawwal. Can be collected continuously or intermittently.

The intention of fasting in the month of Shawwal

For normal nafl fasts, waking up in the morning and then intending is fine, but the six fasts of the month of Shawwal are special types of nafl fasts; So it is better to make intention for this fast within Sahri’s time. If there is a firm determination to fast this day before going to bed or even before, then the new intention will not be valid and the fast will be done even if one cannot eat Sahri.

Before the six fasts of the month of Shawwal or Qaza fast?

Fasting Qaza of Ramadan can be performed at any time before the coming of the next month of Ramadan. If the time is too short to fast the Qajah of Ramadan, it is permissible and pure to fast the Nafal before it. So you can fast Nafal before performing the obligatory fast. However, if possible, it is better to perform the obligatory fasts first. (Fatawa Islamiyah, Volume: 2, Page: 166). Hazrat Ayesha (R.A.) said, ‘I would have had the rest of Ramadan fasting; I could not have done it without the next Shaban.’ (Bukhari: 1950; Muslim: 1146).
