What are the benefits of Tahajjud prayer?

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim, today’s topic of discussion is the benefits of Tahajjud prayer.

Benefits of Tahajjud prayer

1. The Prophet (SM) used to work hard for the night prayer

Even Mubarak’s footsteps would explode. He used to suffer a lot in Qiyam at night. It is narrated on the authority of Aisha (RA) that the Prophet (SM) used to stay up at night so much that his legs would break. Ayesha said to him: O Messenger of Allah, why do you do this when Allah has forgiven all your previous sins? Then He said: Wouldn’t I like to be a thankful servant of Allah!

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 4837; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2620

Narrated from Mughirah Radiyallahu Anhu, he said,

The Prophet (SM) stood up and his legs became swollen. Then He was asked: Has Allah forgiven all your previous sins? Then He said: Shall I not be a servant of thanksgiving?

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 4837; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2619

One of the Companions of the Prophet (SM) said very nicely:

We have the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who recites His Book when the dawn breaks. He spends the night apart from the bed, while the disbelievers are fast asleep.

2. One of the best ways to get to Paradise is through night prayers

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullah ibn Salam (RA) that when the Prophet (SM) arrived in Madinah, the people rushed towards him. And all around it sounded: The Prophet (SM) has arrived, the Messenger of Allah (SM) has arrived, and the Messenger of Allah (SM) has arrived three times. I went to see him with people. When I saw his face well, I clearly understood that his face was not the face of a liar. The first thing I heard him say was:

O people spread the salutation, give food and keep the kinship intact, and perform the prayer at night. When the people are asleep, they will enter Paradise safely.

Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 3251, 1334; Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 2475, 1974

3. The high palaces of Paradise have been built for those who pray at night

Narrated Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari: The Messenger of Allah (SM) said:

Surely there are some mansions in Paradise, which can be seen from inside and outside. What Allah has created for those who give food, speak humbly, observe fasting after fasting, spread the salutation, and pray at night when people are asleep.

Ahmed: (5/343); Ibn Hibban Hadith No. 741; Tirmidhi Hadith No. 2526

4. Those who pray regularly at night are among the Muhsin servants of Allah who are entitled to Allah’s mercy and Paradise.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “They used to sleep for a small part of the night, and in the last hours of the night they would ask for forgiveness.

Surah Az-Zariyat, verses 16-18

5. Allah praises the righteous and the servants of the Most Gracious, and those who pray at night.

He said: And those who spend the night prostrating and standing for their Lord.

Surah Al-Furqan, verse: 74

6. Allah has testified that the people who pray at night are full believers

He said: Only those who believe in My verses who, when they are admonished by it, fall in prostration and glorify their Lord with praise. And they are not arrogant. Their sides are separated from the bed. They call on their Lord with fear and hope. And they spend out of what We have provided for them.

Surah As-Sajdah verses: 15-16

7. Those who pray at night and those who do are not the same

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

Is he who prostrates himself in the watch of the night and stands obedient, fears the Hereafter, and expects the mercy of his Lord equal to him who does not do so? Are those who know and those who do not know equal? Only conscientious people take advice.

Surah Az-Zumar, verse: 9

8. The night prayer is the expiation for sins and the atonement

Narrated Abu Umama: The Prophet (SM) said:

Hold fast to the night prayer, for it is the custom of the righteous before you, and brings nearness to your Lord, the expiation of sins, and the expiation of sins.

Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 3549; Hakeem: (1/306); Bayhaqi: (2/502)

9. The night prayer is the best prayer after the obligatory prayer

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated in Marfu Hadith: The best fast after Ramadan is the fast of Muharram and the obligatory fast The best prayer after the prayer is the night prayer.

Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1163

10. Respect for the believers of Qiyamul Lail

It is narrated on the authority of Sahl ibn Saad (RA) that he said: Gabriel (A) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said:

O Muhammad, live as long as you can, then you will surely die. Love whomever you want, you will surely be separated from him. Do whatever you want, and you will be rewarded. Then he said, “O Muhammad, the honor of the believer is the night prayer, and his honor is the independence from man.”

Hakeem: (4/325)

11. The one who prays at night is the object of jealousy

Because its reward is more. This prayer is better than the world and everything in it. Narrated ‘Abdullah ibn Umar: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

There is no jealousy except for two: A person to whom Allah has given the Quran resurrects with the Qur’an at different times of the day and night. The other person, to whom Allah has given wealth, spends it at different times of the day and night.

Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 615

Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

There is no jealousy except for two: a person to whom Allah has given wealth spends it in the way of truth. The other person, to whom Allah has given wisdom, judges by it and teaches it to the people.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 63; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 617

12. It is a matter of great fortune and good fortune to recite the Qur’an in the night prayer

Narrated ‘Abdullah ibn Amr: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

He who resurrects by ten verses will not be considered among the heedless. And whoever resurrects by a hundred verses, he will be counted among the Canaanites. And whoever resurrects by a thousand verses, will be counted among the Mukantirins.

Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 1397; Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah: (2/161), Hadith No. (1142)

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

Would any of you like to see three fattened camels (owned by him) when he goes home? We said: Yes, he said: It is better to recite three verses in your prayer in the car of Ta’imah than to have three fat fresh camels.

Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 602

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set the maximum and minimum time for the completion of the Qur’an. Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) told the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the completion of the Qur’an. When asked, he said,

In forty days, then he said, in a month, then he said, in fifteen days, then he said, in ten days, then he said, in seven days he said, I have more power than this. He said: He who destroys in less than three days will not understand the Qur’an.

Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 1390
