The Arabic word Zakat (الزكاة) literally means purity, increase, or purification.
What is zakat in Islam?
Zakat is the amount determined by Shariah among certain resources, which has to be spent on specific categories and specific sectors.
Basically, due to the rich person paying zakat for his wealth, his heart is purified and purified from the impurity of miserliness, and wealth increases, that is why zakat is called Zakat.
Allah says:
On the other hand, those who pay Zakat in the hope of gaining Allah’s pleasure, gain double. [Surah Ar-Rum: 39]
Provision of Zakat
Zakat is one of the major obligations of Islam and a foundation of the 5 foundations. In terms of importance, Zakat ranks after Kalama and Salat in Islam. Allah Ta’ala has mentioned Zakat along with Salat many times in the Holy Quran. Zakat has been made obligatory by the Qur’an, Hadith, and Ijma’.
Therefore, whoever denies that Zakat is obligatory becomes a disbeliever and apostate from Islam. He will be asked to repent, if he repents and returns to Islam then it is good, otherwise, he will be killed for apostasy. But if he is a non-Muslim or is brought up in a village where there is no provision to know the rules of Islam, he will be pardoned without being killed for his ignorance of Islam. And whoever does not want to pay zakat, will be forced from him. Abu Bakr [RA] collected Zakat from those who refused to pay it. A person who is stingy in paying zakat or pays less is among the wrongdoers and is punishable by Allah Ta’ala.
