What does Alhamdulillah mean

(اَلۡحَمۡدُ لِلّٰهِ) Alhamdulillah is an Arabic phrase. It has three parts. Its 1st part is al which is used to refer to something specific like the English “the”. And the 2nd part is “Hamdu”, which means praise. Alhamdu means all kinds of praise. And the 3rd part “Lillah” means Allah. So Alhamdulillah means all praise is due to Allah.

What to say when someone says Alhamdulillah

Narrated by Ali (RA):

He said The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When one of you sneezes, let him say Alhamdulillah (All praise be to Allah). Let those present around him say, Yarhamukallah (may God bless you). In response to each sneeze, the person who sneezes should say, Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum (May Allah guide you to the right path and correct your condition).

Narrated by Abu Malik Al-Ashari (RA):

He said Rasulullah (SAW) said: Purity is half of faith. ‘Alhamdulillah’ will fill the measure of the scale and “Subhanallah Alhamdulillah” will fill the space between the heavens and the earth. ‘Salat’ is a bright light. ‘Sadaqa’ is evidence. ‘Patience’ is astronomical. And ‘Al Qur’an’ will be proof for you or against you. In fact, all people sell themselves for ‘Amal every morning. By his ‘Amal, he frees himself (from Allah’s ‘punishment) or he brings about his own destruction.

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA):

The poor companions said: O Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)! Rich people have gone before us with high status and eternal blessings. He asked: How is it? They said: They offer the same prayer as we offer. As we do Jihad, so do they Jihad, and they also give charity out of their surplus wealth, But we don’t have the resources. He said: Shall I not give you a good deed, by which you will be able to attain the status of those before you and be ahead of those who come after you, and no one can do good deeds like you, except those who do good deeds like you? except That ‘Amal is that you recite ‘Subhanallah’ 10 times, ‘Alhamdu Lillah’ 10 times, and ‘Allahu Akbar’ 10 times after every prayer.

Narrated by Numan Ibn Bashir (RA):

He said The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The glories of Allah that you describe through Tasbeeh (Subhanallah), Tahleel (la ilaha illallah), and Tahmid (alhamdulillah) move around the Throne with a sound like the buzzing of bees. They continue to mention their respective senders. Does not one of you like that there should be a constant mention of Allah to Him?

Narrated by Umm Hani (RA):

He said, I came to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and said, O Messenger of Allah! Tell me a story. For now, I am old and weak, and my body is heavy. He said: Recite Allahu Akbar a hundred times, Alhamdulillah a hundred times, and Subhanallah a hundred times. It is better than donating a hundred horses with saddles and bridles in the way of Allah (Jihad), better than a hundred camels, and freeing a hundred slaves.

Narrated by Ali (RA):

He said that Fatimah (R.A.) had a blister on her hand while traveling and she once complained to the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (may peace be upon him) to ask for a servant from a number of prisoners of war, but not finding him, she informed ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and left. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned, he informed him of the matter. He (peace be upon him) came to us when we were going to sleep.

When we got up from the bed upon his arrival, he said: Stay at home. He came and sat between us. I could even feel the cool touch of his feet on my chest. He said: Shall I not guide you two to a better way that will be better than your worldly things? That is, you should say Subhanallah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times while going to bed. And it will be better for both of you than a servant.

On the authority of Anas Ibn Malik (RA):

The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was passing by a tree with dry leaves. When he struck it with his stick the leaves suddenly fell. Then he said, “Alhamdulillah Subhanallah wa Laila-ha illallahu wallahu Akbar” (All praise is due to Allah Almighty, Allah is Most Holy and there is no true God but Allah, He is Most Great). He sheds his sins like the leaves of this tree.
