Is marriage compulsory in Islam?

Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, Today’s topic of discussion is whether marriage is obligatory or Sunnah. And the importance, necessity, and benefits of marriage.

Is marriage compulsory in Islam?

Marriage is sometimes obligatory, sometimes sunnnat, sometimes haram. The rules of marriage are determined according to the status of the person. Things will be clear from the following hadiths, inshallah.

Hadith No. 1

On the authority of Hazrat Abu Naji Radiyallahu Anhu: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, I have nothing to do with anyone among you who is capable of marriage but does not marry. (Targib).

Hadith No. 2

Narrated by Hazrat Anas Radiyallahu Anhu. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, When a slave gets married, he fulfills half of his religion. Now it is necessary to fear Allah about the other half. (Targib).

Hadith No. 3

Narrated by Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Masud Radiyallahu Anhu, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, O young people! The wife among you who is capable of providing maintenance should be married because marriage lowers the gaze and sanctifies the place of shame. And whoever is unable to provide sustenance should fast. Because fasting is like impotence for him (relieves arousal). ( Meshkat, Imdadul Fatwa: Volume: 2, Page: 258).

Hadith No. 4

Narrated by Hazrat Abu Naji Radiyallahu Anhu, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, Waiting! Waiting! The man who has no wife. The Companions asked, if he has a lot of wealth, is he a hypocrite? Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Even though he has a lot of wealth, he is greedy.”

He also said, looking forward! Waiting! The woman who does not have a husband. Companions ask, if he has a lot of wealth, is he still a coward? Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Even though he has a lot of wealth, he is greedy.” (resign)

The benefits of wealth, tranquility, or freedom from worldly cares do not belong to the man with no wife. The fate of the woman who does not have a husband is not met. From practical experience, marriage has many great benefits in this world. (Hayatul Muslimin; page: 187)

Marriage is a special gift of God. Both worldly and religious life are settled by marriage. There are no evil thoughts and restlessness. The greatest benefit is the acquisition of abundant merit. Because husband and wife sit together talking about love, killing each other is more virtuous than praying.

Hadith No. 5

Narrated by Hazrat Aisha Radiyallahu Anha. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, Marry a woman; He will bring wealth to you.

Attracting wealth means that both husband and wife are knowledgeable and benevolent to each other. The husband remembers that – expenses have increased in my responsibility; Then try to earn more and more. Women also take measures that men cannot take. As a result, they can become calm and carefree. And this is the main purpose of wealth. (Hayatul Muslimeen)

Hadith No. 6

Narrated by Hazrat Makal Ibn Yasar Radiyallahu Anhu, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Marry women who give birth to more children.” Because I will be proud of another ummah by your superiority, that my ummah is so much! ( Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Hayatul Muslimin: Page: 189)

Hadith No. 7

Narrated in a long hadith on the authority of Hazrat Abujar Giffari [radiyallahu anhu], Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said to Akkaf radiyallahu anhu, O Akkaf! do you have a wife He said no. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, Do you have wealth and prosperity? He said I have wealth and prosperity.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, You are now among the brothers of Satan! If you are a Christian, be their priest! Undoubtedly, to marry our religion! The worst among you is that person who is single! The worst person among the dead is that single! Do you want to have a relationship with the devil? Satan has no weapon more terrible than women! Which is effective on religious people! They are involved in women’s scandals, But those who are married are pure from women’s fetnah! Free from dirt! Then said, Akkaf! be your destruction You marry or you remain among the backward people.

Musnad Ahmad, Jamiul Fawaed, Imdadul Fatwa: Volume: 2, Page: 259

From the above hadiths, it is clear that marriage is obligatory for those who have the financial and physical capacity and are likely to engage in haram acts if they do not marry. And for a person who can save himself from Haram, marriage is Sunnah. And marriage is a haraam for one who lacks financial and physical capacity.
