Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, today’s topic of discussion is what Iqamat, Iqamat with Bengali pronunciation, rules for giving Iqamat in Namaz, reply to Iqamat, etc.

Iqamah meaning

Iqamat means to stand up. The present worshipers must give ‘Iqamat’ to hear the warning to stand in prayer. It is Sunnah to give the Adhan and Iqamat in the obligatory prayer in all situations, whether in congregation or alone.

Nasa’i Ha/667-68; Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Mishkat Ha/665, ‘Virtues of Azan’ paragraph-5.

Iqamah words with English transliteration

According to the aforementioned hadith narrated by Hazrat Abdullah bin Zayed (RA) and Abu Dawud, there are 11 kalaemas for Iqamat. Namely:

2. (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ) Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallah,

3. (أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ) Ashhadu Anna Muhammadar Rasulullah,

4. (يَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ) Hayya ‘Alas Salaah,

5. (حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ) Hayya ‘Alal Falaah,

6. (قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ) Qad Qamatis Salaah, (2 times),

7. (اللهُ أَكْبَرُ) Allahu Akbar (2 times),

8. (لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ) La ilaha illallah.

A total of 11.

Abu Dawud ha/499, Aonul Mabud ha/495.

How to give Iqamah?

Having a loud voice, the Prophet (PBUH) asked Belal (RA) to give the ‘Azaan’ and Abdullah bin Zaid (RA), the first narrator of dreams, to provide the ‘Ekamat’. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Belal was ordered to give the Adhan twice and the Iqamat once.

Muttafaq ‘Alaih, Mishkat Ha/641, ‘Salat’ chapter-4, ‘Azan’ paragraph-4.

Thus, in the history of Islam, the call to prayer was given twice and Iqamat once. After the conquest of Makkah in the 8th year of Hijri, the Prophet (PBUH) returned to Madinah and appointed Belal as a permanent Muwazeen in Masjid al-Nabawi. After the death of the Prophet (PBUH) in 11 Hijri, Belal (RA) migrated to Syria and left his disciple Saad al-Qaraz in Madinah in charge. Hazrat Abdullah Bin Umar (RA) said,

During the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) it was customary to perform the Adhaan twice and the Iqamat once, except for the Qada Qa-Matich Salah twice.

Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Daremi, Mishkat Ha/643.

Allah-hu-Akbar is counted here twice as a pair ‘once’ (marratan). Moreover, due to the Hamzah (I) of the word ‘Allah’ (i) being ‘Wasli’ first ‘Allah-hu Akbar’ can be read together with the next ‘Allah-hu Akbar’. The opinion of saying ‘Qa’d Qa’matish Salah’ once and ‘Allah-hu Akbar’ once at the beginning and the end is ‘Shaz’ which is unacceptable.

Naylul Awtar, ‘Details of Azan’ paragraph, 2/106.

Because in Abu Dawud, the exact description of the Kalimas of the call to prayer and iqamat has been given.

Abu Dawud Ha/499, ‘Salat’ chapter-2, ‘How to give the Adhan’ paragraph-28.

Imam Khattabi said, that the whole Hijaz, Syria, Yemen, Egypt, Morocco, and the remote areas of the Islamic world, including Makkah-Madinah, have the rule of giving Iqamat once and this is the school of Islam of almost all the Ulama.

Note the discussion of Aonul Mabud 2/175, Ha/495.

Imam Bagavi said this is the Madhhab of most scholars.

Naylul Awtar ‘Description of Azan’ paragraph, 2/106.

The Rabbi of Ikamat twice used to give ‘Ikamat’ once followed by Hazrat Abu Mahfurah (RA) himself and his son Hazrat Belal (RA).

Commentary on Abu Dawud (with Awnul Mabud), Ha/495 p.2/175 note.

Answer to Iqamah

There is no Saheeh hadith related to answering Iqamat. Therefore, it is not the Sunnah to respond to Iqamat or to give it. Someone can give if they want, if they don’t they don’t. If you answer, you will say exactly the words of Iqamat. Abu Dawud’s Hadith No. 528 says, ‘Qad Kamatis Salah’, say in response ‘Aka-mahullahu a-ada-maha. This hadith is weak (Irwawal Galil: 241). Therefore, it is better not to say because no command can be verified with weak hadith.
