Mashallah Meaning in English. What does Mashallah Mean?
Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, Today’s topic of discussion is the meaning of Ma sha Allah and when to say Ma sha Allah, why to say Masha Allah, what to say after saying Masha Allah, etc.
Mashallah meaning
مَا شَاءَ الله
Pronunciation: Ma Sha Allah.
Meaning: Whatever God willed, it happened.
Ma Sha Allah La Quwwata Illa Billah meaning
مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Pronunciation: Ma Sha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah.
Meaning: Whatever Allah willed, it happened, there is no power except by Allah.
When to say Mashallah?
The words of the Quran
Almighty Allah says:
And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees and placed between them [fields of] crops.
Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short thereof in anything, And We caused to gush forth within them a river.
And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, “I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men.”
And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, “I do not think that this will perish – ever.
And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return.”
His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, “Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then proportioned you [as] a man?
But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone.
Although you see me less than you in wealth and children, why did you, when you entered your garden, not say,
(“مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ”) “Ma Sha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah” means “What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah”.
It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a calamity from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,
Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it.”
And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises, and said, “Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone.”
And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah, nor could he defend himself.
There the authority is [completely] for Allah, the Truth. He is best in reward and best in outcome.
Surah Kahf Verse No. 32-44
The words of the hadith
On the authority of Hazrat Anas (RA), he said, The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, When Allah bestows a blessing on a servant, whether it is a wife or wealth, then if he says: (“مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ”) “Ma Sha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah” means “Whatever Allah willed, it happened, there is no power except by Allah”. But he will not see any danger in it other than death. Rasulullah (SAW) used to prove this by the said verse.

Why do you have to say, Masha Allah?
From the above Quranic verses and hadiths, it is understood that when Allah Ta’ala bestows a blessing on a servant, be it a wife, children, relatives, or wealth, then he should say (“مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ”) “Ma Sha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah” means “Whatever Allah willed, it happened, there is no power except by Allah”. But he sees no danger in it except death. That is, Allah Ta’ala will protect it.
Now speaking, you yourself recite the Tasbeeh as a way of thanking Allah for the blessings you have received. There is a misconception among many people, for example, if a guest comes to your house and sees your beautiful baby and says Masha Allah, then your baby will be safe from his evil eye. And if he doesn’t say Masha’Allah, there will be a possibility of that person’s curse on your child. Or suppose you went to a relative’s house and saw his beautiful child and said Masha Allah, his child will be safe from your evil eye. And if you don’t say Masha’Allah, there will be a possibility that you will be angry with his child.
Actually, it is not like that. If that person recites the Tasbeeh as a way of thanking Allah for his child, then Allah will protect his child, even if you do not recite the Tasbeeh. Again, if you repeat the Tasbeeh as a way of thanking Allah for the birth of your child, then Allah will protect your child, even if that person does not recite the Tasbeeh.
It is the same not only with children but with all blessings. You yourself praise Allah for the blessings you have received i.e. say “Ma sha Allah, La Quwata Illa Billah”. But Allah will protect it, Inshallah, whether someone else says it or not after seeing the blessings you have received. Similarly, seeing the other you have to say MashaAllah, it is not like that. But good for you if you say so.
It is the same not only with children but with all blessings. You yourself will praise Allah for the blessings you have received i.e. say Ma Sha Allah, La Quwata Illa Billah but Allah will protect it Insha Allah, whether someone else sees you saying it or not. Just as you see the other way around you have to say it’s not like that. But if you say so, good for you.
One thing that needs to be said here is that; When it is the case that you are happy to see a blessing that someone of yours has received, you say “Ma Sha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah” as a thank you for Allah’s blessings. Because you have received the benefit in one glance. Also, if you see something good in anyone, it is good for you.
Response to Mashallah
It is not like when someone says “Ma Sha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah” in gratitude for the blessings he has received, the listener will say something in response or be required to say something because it was not meant for him. And the most important thing is that nothing like this is described in Quran or Hadith.
But one thing that needs to be said is that when someone sees the blessings you have received and says “Ma Sha Allah, La Quwwata Illa Billah” as a way of thanking Allah, you also say the same; Although you have said it before. Or you say ‘Alhamdulillah’ or ‘Subhanallah’. Again you can say to that person “Jajakallahu Khairan” means “May God reward you well”; As he has sought your welfare through reciting the said Tasbeeh.
