How to pray Tahajjud prayer step by step?

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim, The Arabic word Tahajjud means a person who wakes up and stands in prayer. Tahajjud prayer is a special virtuous prayer that strengthens the faith of the believer. Tahajjud prayers are Muakkadah in the Sunnah This is proved by the consensus of the Quran, Sunnah, and the Ummah. Allah speaks of the virtues of the servants of the Most Gracious, and those who spend the night in prostration and standing for their Lord. It is better to perform Tahajjud prayers in two Rak’ats. It is better to perform the nafl prayer day or night in two Rakats in one salam, although four Rak’ats, even eight Rak’ats can be performed in one salam.

How many Rakats in Tahajjud?

There is no specific number of Rakats for Tahajjud or Qiyamul Lail; Because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

Night prayer two rakat, two rakat; When one of you fears fear, he will offer one rak’ah of prayer, which will make up for his previous prayers.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 990; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 749

But it is better to limit it to eleven or thirteen rak’ahs; Since the number of Rakats of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was similar to that narrated by Aisha Radiyallahu Anha, she said,

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to pray eleven Rakats after finishing the Isha prayer until Fajr; After every two Rakats he would offer salam and perform Witr by one Rakat.

In another hadith from him: Abu Salama Ibn Abdur Rahman (RA) said,

He once asked Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) how the Prophet’s (may peace be upon him) night prayer of Ramadan was. Then He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not pray more than 11 Rakats in the month of Ramadan and outside of Ramadan. He used to pray (2+2) four rakat first. You (Abu Salama) do not ask about her beauty and length. Then he used to pray (2+2) four Rakats. You don’t ask about her beauty and size. Then he used to pray three Rakats (Witr).

Ibn Umar (RA) said:

When the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was in the pulpit, a person asked him, what is your opinion about the night (Nafal) prayer? He said: Two Rakats will be recited; One more rakat (Witr) should be recited if one fears fainting. It will invalidate his prayer.

Considering the number of Rakats, there are a total of six methods of performing the night prayer in Sahih hadith; It is valid to adopt any of them. Methods discussed are:

First Method: 13 Rakat

Begin it by lightly praying two rak’ahs. According to the most prominent opinion, these two Rakats are the two Rakats sunnah after the obligatory Esha prayer or the specific two Rakats of prayer with which the Prophet (PBUH) used to start the night prayer. As in the past. Then perform two extremely long Rakats; Then two Rakats shorter than this will be recited. Then two Rakats will be recited less than before. After that, two Rakats will be recited that are less long than that. Then two Rakats shorter than this will be recited. Then one rakat of Witr will be recited.

Second Method: 13 Rakat

I will pray eight Rakats two by two and after every two Rakats I will return salam. After that five rakat Witr will be recited. Only sit in the fifth rak’ah and return the salam.

Third method: 11 Rakat

Between every two Rakats, the Salam will be returned and one Rakat Witr will be recited.

Fourth Method: 11 Rakat

Among them, the first four Rakats will be recited in one salam, then the next four Rakats will be read in another salam. Then three Rakats of Witr will be recited. Rasulullah (PBUH) used to sit between the two Rakats of these four and three Rakats. We do not get any satisfactory answer in this regard. However, sitting after two Rakats in the three rakat Witr Salah is not Shariah compliant.

Fifth Method: 11 Rakat

After performing eight consecutive Rakats, he will sit in the 8th rakat and after reciting Tashahhud and the blessings of the Prophet, he will stand up without returning the salam. After that one rakat Witr will be recited and salam will be returned. This is nine rakat. Then sit and offer two Rakats.

Sixth method: 9 Rakat

He will read six Rakats consecutively and sit in the sixth rakat, then recite Tashahhud and bless the Prophet (peace be upon him) and stand without returning the salam as before. After that, one rakat of Witr will be recited and Salam will be returned. This is seven rak’ahs. Then sit and read two Rakats.

These methods have been proven through clear evidence from the Prophet (PBUH). Other types can be added to these methods in such a way that the desired number of Rakats from each type will be reduced to one Rakat Witr. To follow the following sayings of the Prophet (PBUH). He said, whoever wants to pray five Rakat Witr, whoever wants to pray three Rakat Witr, and whoever wants to pray one Rakat Witr.

Tahawi, Ha/1603; Hakem, Ha/1128; Darakutni, Ha/1660; Bayhaqi, Ha/4776

If you want these five and three rakat Witr, you will perform it in one meeting and one salam. As described in the second method. And if you want, return salam after every two Rakats. As described in the third and other methods. And that is the best.

On the other hand, we did not find evidence from the Prophet (PBUH) about sitting and not returning salam every two Rakats of the five and three rakat Witr prayers. But the main thing is permissible. But when the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade praying three rak’ahs of Witr like Maghrib and explaining the reason, he said, “You do not compare Witr Salat with Maghrib.”

A person who prays three rak’ahs of Witr must come out of this similitude. It can be done in two ways:

1. Returning salam between even and odd. It is the most powerful and the best.

2. Do not sit between even and odd. Allah knows best.

Tahajjud prayer niyat

It is obligatory to make intention for every act of worship. Niyat means a determination of the mind. And its place is the heart; Not the face. None of the Prophet and his Companions uttered any specific words. So it is a Bidat to pronounce it orally. Moreover, there are no restrained words for intention. If you make a conscious decision for any act of worship, it will become Niyat. There is no need to pronounce anything on the face.

Narrated Al-Qamamah Ibn Waqqas Al-Laisi: He said:

I heard ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (R) standing on the pulpit saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Work (will be due) according to intention. And man will be rewarded according to his intention.

Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 1

It is to be noted that if one performs all the prayers at the beginning of Tahajjud, then it is enough. It is not necessary to make an intention in every 2 rak’ahs. However, if someone leaves the prayers and starts reading them again, a new intention is needed. It is important to note that this is not the case. But reading is a Bidat.

What surah to read for Tahajjud prayer?

It is wajib (compulsory) to recite any surah or part of a surah after reciting Surah Al-Fatiha in every Rakat of the prayers other than the obligatory prayers (wajib, sunnah, nafl). There is no specific Surah for Nafal Namaz. The worshiper will read the Qur’an from the place that he finds easier for himself.

Abu Salama Ibn Abdur Rahman said:

He once asked Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) how the Prophet’s (may peace be upon him) night prayer of Ramadan was. Then He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not pray more than 11 Rakats in the month of Ramadan and outside of Ramadan. He used to pray (2+2) four rakat first. Praying beautifully without hurrying

The Holy Prophet s.a.w. and his Companions used to pray the night prayer very long; As discussed earlier. The Prophet’s bowing and prostration were almost as long as his Qiyam, And for such a long period, he would remain in prostration that about 50 verses could be recited during that time.

So this motivates us to try our best to make our night prayer close to their prayer; We will also lengthen the Qiraat, and recite more Tasbeeh and dua in the Ruku, Sijdah, and the Qoma and sitting; So that we feel a little bit of humility; That humility is the soul and brain of prayer; We should accept the Sunnah of this prayer in terms of both its method, characteristics and quantity (quality and quantity); Therefore we will adopt beauty and length of prayer according to our ability; As we accept the number of rakat. Needless to say, performing the duty of rakat without modesty, presence of mind and slowness is not the main objective.

On the other hand, excessive haste in prayer is not permissible. Moreover, if any wajib or Fard of the prayer is not performed correctly in haste, then the prayer itself will be invalidated.

It is fard and essential to be slow and steady in prayer; Whoever rejects, his prayer will be nullified; the Holy Prophet once saw a man who was impatient and restless while praying and ordered him to return the prayer and taught that it is wajib to adopt Ruku, Sijdah, Qawma and slowness and stability between the two Sijdahs in the prayer.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “The prayer of the person who does not straighten his back in bowing and prostrating is not sufficient.”

Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said, The worst thief is the one who steals his prayers; People said, O Messenger of Allah, how will you steal the prayer? He said, without fully bowing and prostrating.

He also said Allah does not look at the prayer of a servant who does not straighten his spine in bowing and prostrating.

Is Tahajjud prayer should be performed daily?

It is better to perform the Tahajjud prayer daily or regularly without leaving it. It is mustahabb to recite a certain number of Rakats regularly; If the body is strong and the mind is happy, then do long kirat; Otherwise, he will pray with a light Qirat, and if he runs away, he will perform Qaza. Narrated Aisha Radiyallahu Anha: The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:

Do what you can; Because Allah does not tire until you tire. He used to say: That deed is preferable to Allah; Banda maintains regularity over it, though the amount is less.

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to me:

O Abdullah, you are not like so-and-so, he used to fast at night, but he abandoned it.

Ayesha Radiyallahu Anha said:

When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed a prayer, he preferred to perform it regularly; If sleep overcame him or he found it difficult to stand, he would pray twelve rak’ahs a day.

On the authority of Umar Ibn Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:

If a person who falls asleep from his Ajifa or what is left of it, recites it between the Fajr and Zuhr prayers, it will be written for him as if he had recited it at night.

Is Tahajjud prayer should be performed in the dark?

The purpose of performing the night prayer is to gain more of Allah’s pleasure; Therefore it is essential to adopt concentration and humility in Salah; If praying Tahajjud in bright light causes disturbance in concentration, it is better to pray Tahajjud in dim light.

Tahajjud prayer time

The best time for Qiyamul Lail is the last third of the night. It is permissible to perform the night prayer at the beginning, end, and middle of the night, but it is better to perform the last third. Narrated by Anas Radiyallahu Anhu, he said,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to eat and drink in any month, at one time we thought he would not fast in that month. He used to fast in any month, at one time we thought he would not eat or drink in that month. He was like that, if you want to see him praying at night, you can see him, and if you want to see him asleep, you can see him.

From this one understands the simple rules of night prayer, which will be performed when the benefit arises. Yes, it is better to pray in the last part of the night. Narrated by Amr Ibn Abasa, may Allah be pleased with him, he is a Prophet. He heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say:

Towards the end of the night the servant is closest to his Lord, if you can be one of the remembrancers of Allah at that time, then be one of them.

This is further clarified by the hadith narrated from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Wasallam says:

Our Lord descends into the heavens of the world every night when the last third of the night remains. Then he said, “Who will call me, to whom I will answer?” Who will pray to me, whom I will grant? Who will apologize to me, I will forgive him. Keep saying the same until dawn.

Manners of Tahajjud prayer

1. Intention of Tahajjud while sleeping

The purpose of sleep should be to gain strength in worship, then sleep will also be rewarded. Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

No one used to pray at night and then fell asleep. Allah will write down for him the reward of prayer, and his sleep will be a charity for him.

Nasai, Hadith No. 164; Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 1314

Narrated Abu Darda: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

The one who came to his bed, intending to get up at night to pray, but fell asleep, and then fell asleep, will be written for him according to his intention. And his sleep will be a charity from Allah for him.

Nasai, Hadith No. 6

2. Waking up, shaking hands, removing sleep from the face, remembering Allah and doing Miswak, and reciting prayers.

Narrated Ubada Ibn Samet: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever wakes up at night and says: O Allah, forgive me, his supplication will be accepted.

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

The Prophet (SM) woke up and wiped his face with his hands, then recited the last ten verses of Sura al-Imran.

Narrated from Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, he said,

When the Prophet (SM) woke up at night, he would grind his mouth with a Miswaq.

Then recite other dhikrs of waking up and perform ablution according to the command of Allah.

3. Initiating Tahajjud by light 2 Rakat Salat

This is because the words and deeds of the Prophet (SM) prove the same. Ayesha Radiyallahu Anhu said,

When the Prophet (SM) would get up at night to pray, he would start his prayer with a light two-rak’ah prayer.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (SM) said:

When one of them gets up at night to pray, he should start his prayer with a light two rak’ahs.

4. Performing Tahajjud at home

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to perform Tahajjud at home. Narrated Zayd Ibn Thabit: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

You should pray at home because the best prayer for a person is in his house except the obligatory.

5. Realizing Tahajjud regularly

Never give up. It is mustahabb to recite a certain number of rak’ahs regularly. If the body is strong and the mind is cheerful, then it will perform long Qirat, otherwise, it will perform light Qiraat, and if it ever runs, it will make up Qiyam. Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (SM) said:

Do as much as you can, for God does not get tired until you are tired. He used to say: The deed which is more desirable in the sight of Allah is the one on which the servant maintains order, even though the amount is less.

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullah ibn’ Amr as-Radiyallahu Anhu that the Prophet (SM) told me:

O Abdullah, you are not like that, he used to stay up at night, but he has given up.

Ayesha Radiyallahu Anha said:

When the Prophet (SM) offered a prayer, he preferred to offer it regularly. If he fell asleep or had difficulty standing, he would pray twelve Rak’ats a day.

Narrated ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA): The Messenger of Allah (SM) said:

If a person falls asleep from his Ajifah or has some leftovers, if he recites it between the Fajr and Zuhr prayers, it will be written for him as if he recited it at night.

6. If drowsiness comes, then leave the prayer and go to sleep

It is better to have a good night’s sleep. Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (SM) said:

When one of you falls asleep in prayer, he should lie down so that he may fall asleep. Because, when one of the Ta’imah prays while he is asleep, he may go to apologize for himself and insult himself.

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated from the Prophet (SM) in the Sanad Marfu:

When one of them is standing at night, then if it is difficult for him to read the Qur’an, he cannot say what to say, then he should lie down.

7. It is mustahabb to wake the wife for the Tahajjud

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

May Allah have mercy on him. He got up at night and prayed, then woke up his wife. If he doesn’t want to get up, he sprinkles water on his face. May Allah have mercy on the woman who gets up at night to pray, then wakes her husband, and if he does not want to get up, sprinkles water on his face.

Narrated Abu Saeed and Abu Huraira: The Prophet (sm) said:

When a man wakes up and wakes up his wife, then both of them perform the prayer, they are written to include the women who remember more and the men who remember more.

It is narrated on the authority of Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (sm), that she said: One night the Prophet (SM) woke up, then

8. The amount of recitation of the Quran that can be done with attention and understanding

It is permissible to read as much as one can or more or less as high-low as one wishes. Yes, it is better to read aloud if the recitation comes to life or the people present can hear, or if there is any other benefit. And if someone is reciting Tahajjud nearby, or he is in trouble because of his loud voice, then it is better to recite it slowly. And if there is no reason to prioritize; then the way will be read.

There are hadiths about all the conditions described above. Narrated from Abdullah Ibn Masood (RA), he said,

I prayed with the Prophet (sm) one night, and he made it so long that I had a bad wish; Then said; What was the wish? He said that I wished I could leave him and sit down.

Qiraat of three Rakat Witr

It is Sunnah to recite Surah Al-A’la in the first Rakat of the three Rakat Witr, Surah Kafirun in the second Rakat, and Surah Ikhlas in the third Rakat.

Nasa’i, Ha/1729-31, Night and Day Nafal Salat Chapter-20, Paragraph-47; Hakem, Ha/1144 ‘Witar’ chapter. Hakem called the hadith Saheeh.

Sometimes Surah Falak and Nas will be read along with it.

At-Tirmidhi, Ha/463, ‘Witar’ chapter-3, ‘Qiraat of Witar’ paragraph-9; Hakem, Ha/1144. Hakem called the hadith Sahih and al-Dahabi supported him.

It is narrated in a Sahih source from the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) that he once recited one hundred verses of Surah Nisa in one rak’ah of Witr.

On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA): He said that when the Prophet (PBUH) used to stand for the Tahajjud prayer, he would say:

O Allah, praise be to You. You are the light of the heavens, earth, and whoever is in them. You are true, your promise is true, your speech is true, meeting you is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, the Hour is true, and the prophets are true. And Muhammad is right, oh God To You I have converted, in You I have relied on, in You I have believed, to You I have repented, in You I have argued, in You I have judged, so forgive me for what I have done. And I did not delay, and I did not conceal, and I did not announce, you are the one who advances and you are the one who delays. There is no god but you, or there is no god but you.

Pronunciation : Allahumma Lakal Hamdu Anta Qayyimus Samawayati Wal Ardi Wa Maan Fihinna Wa Lakalhamdu. Laka Mulqus Samawayati Wal Ardi Wa Maan Fihinna. Wa Lakal Hamdu Angta Nurus Samawati Wal Ard; Wa Lakal Hamdu Angtal Hakku. Wa wa’dukal hakku; Wa likbauka hakku. Wall Jannatu Hakku. One Naru Hakku. One Nabiyuna Hakku. Meaning: O Allah! All praise is due to You, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them, You are their Light; And all praise is yours alone; The heavens and the earth and all that is between them, You are the sole owner of all these things, And all praise is yours alone; You are the truth, Your promise is true, meeting You in the Hereafter is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, Qiyamat is true, Prophets are true and Muhammad is true; O Allah! I have surrendered to you; I only trust in you. I believe in you alone. Back to you. Enmity with enemies for your satisfaction. I want justice from you. So please forgive my past, present, and hidden open sins. You advance a person, and you make a person backward, there is no god but You.

Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA):

He once spent the night in the house of Maimuna (RA), the wife of the Prophet (PBUH); She was the aunt of Ibn Abbas (RA); Ibn Abbas (ra) said: Then I slept on the wide side of the bed and the Messenger of God (may peace be upon him) and his wife slept on the long side of the bed, And the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) fell asleep. Thus, when the night was half over, the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) woke up before or after it. He sat up and wiped the sleepiness from his face with his hands. Then he recited the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran; Then he stood and performed ablution beautifully from a hanging pot.

Then he stood in prayer. Ibnu ‘Abbas (RA) said, I also got up and did the same as he did; Then I went and stood on his left; He placed his right hand on my head and took my right ear with a little shake and made me stand on the right side; Then he prayed two rak’ahs; Then two Rakats, then two Rakats, then two Rakats, then two Rakats, then two Rakats, then Witr; Then lay down; After a while, when the Mu’azzin came to him, he stood up and offered two Rakat prayers lightly; Then he went out and prayed Fajr.

Qunut of Witr prayer and the place of recitation

At the end of the last rak’at, before the Ruku, the Qur’an is sometimes recited through the dua, which the Prophet (PBUH) taught his grandson Hasan bin Ali (RA). The two are:

Pronunciation: Alla-hummahdini fiman hadayta, wa a-fini fiman ‘a fayta, wa tawallani fiman tawallayata, wa ba-rikli fima ‘atwayta, wa kini sharra ma qavayata; Faynaka takrizi wa la yuqrya ‘alayka, wa innahu la yazilu mao wa-layta, wa la yayizh maan ‘a-dayta, taba-rakta rabbana wa taa-layta.

Translation: O Allah! Count me among those whom You have guided, and guide them. Count me among those whom You have forgiven. Among those whom you have been guardians, be my guardians. Bless me with what You have bestowed upon me. Please save me from the evil that you have decreed. Because you decide, no one can decide against you. Whomever you befriend, he can never be insulted. And with whom you are enmity, he can never be honored. O our Lord! You are blessed and supreme.

There is no problem in reciting Qunut after Ruku and adding dua of kunut in the second half of Ramadan with the curse (curse) on the infidels, reciting durood on Rasulullah (SAW) and dua for Muslims. Pronunciation: Allah-Humma Kritilil Kafaratallazeena Yashuduna ‘an Sabilika, Wa Yukazibrina Rusulaka, Wala Yuminuna Biwadika Wa Kha-Lif Bayna Kalima Tihim, Wa Alki Fi Qubihimur Ruba, Wa Alki Alaihim Rizzaka Wa Azabaka Ilahal Haq.

Translation: O Allah! You destroy the disbelievers. Those who block Your way, disbelieve in Your sent messengers and do not believe in Your promises. You cause division in their ranks, strike terror into their hearts, and O Lord of Truth! Determine your punishment for them. Then he used to recite durood on the Prophet (PBUH) and pray for the welfare of the Muslims as much as he could. Then he used to ask for forgiveness from the believers.

The narrator said, that after cursing the infidels, reciting blessings on the Prophet (PBUH), asking for forgiveness for the believing men and women, and asking for himself, he (Ubai bin Ka’b) would say:

Pronunciation : Allahumma yaya-ka na’budu, walaka nuchalli wa nasjudu, wa ilaika nas’a wa nahfidu, wa narju rahmataka rabbana, wa nakha-fu ‘aza-bakal jidda, inna ‘aza-baqa liman ‘adaita mulhaq.

Translation: O Allah! You alone do we worship, pray, and prostrate to You. We make every effort to get back to you. O our Lord! We seek Your mercy and fear Your severe punishment. To him who harbored enmity with you, your chastisement is assigned. Then he would go into prostration with Takbeer.

Dua after Witr prayer

Sunnah recites this dua at the end of Witr (before or after Salam).

Pronunciation: Alla-humma inni auzubika birika min sakhatika, wa bimuafatika min ukbatika, wa a’uzu bika min ka, la uhchi chanaan alaika, anta kama achnayata ala nafsika.

Translation: O Allah! I seek refuge from Your wrath through Your satisfaction and from Your punishment through Your forgiveness; I seek refuge in You through You. I cannot count your praises; The way you appreciate yourself, the same applies to you.

After returning to the salam of Witr, say ‘Subhanal Malikil Quddus’ three times in a loud voice and say the third time in a long drawl.

Tahajjud prayer rules for women

There is no difference between men and women in the rules of prayer, except that in the congregation, if a woman is an imam, she will not stand in front like the men but will stand in the same row. It should be noted that men cannot offer prayers during the imamate of a woman.
