Sleeping and Waking up Dua in Arabic and English
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim, today we will discuss sleeping dua and waking up dua; InshaAllah, I will mention some hadiths about what dua the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite when he sleeping and what dua he used to recite when he woke up.
When sleeping, say lying on the right side
بِاسْمِكَا للَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Bismikalla-humma amutu wa ahiya.
O, Allah! In your name, I live and die. That is, I am sleeping in your name and by your grace, I will be awakened again.
Tell me when you wake up
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Alhamdulillah- hillazi ahiyana ba’da ma ama-tana wa ilaihin nushur.
All praise is due to Allah; Who gave us life after death; and to Him is our resurrection on the day of resurrection.

حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ ” بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا ”. وَإِذَا قَامَ قَالَ ” الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
The one who is alive after we died and to who is the light revealed.
Narrated from Hudhayfah Ibn Yaman (R)
He said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to take refuge in bed, he would recite this supplication: O Allaah! Die with your name and live with your name. And when he woke up, he would recite: All praise is due to Allah Who has revived us after our death. And the return is his drink.

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَرْعَرَةَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، سَمِعَ الْبَرَاءَ بْنَ عَازِبٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَمَرَ رَجُلاً. وَحَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَوْصَى رَجُلاً فَقَالَ “ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ فَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لاَ مَلْجَأَ وَلاَ مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلاَّ إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ. فَإِنْ مُتَّ مُتَّ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ ”.
Narrated from Bara Ibn Azib
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) instructed a man. According to another source, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) bequeathed to a person that when you go to bed; you will recite this supplication: O Allah! I surrendered my soul to you, and entrusted my affairs to you, and turned my face to you, hoping for your mercy and fear of your wrath. There is no place for you except to escape from Your wrath and escape from Your torment. I believe in the Book which Thou hast sent down, and in the Prophet whom Thou hast sent, I believe in it. If you die in this state, you will die on the religion of Islam.
