Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, Today’s topic of discussion is what is the meaning of the word Eid, the history of Eid, whether is it obligatory to listen to the Eid sermon, the rules for giving the Eid sermon, and how many Eid sermons are there.

What is Eid?

Eid means joy; It is an Arabic word; Which is derived from the root ‘Awad’. It literally means to return repeatedly; It is named Eid because this day returns repeatedly. Allah Ta’ala repeatedly blesses his servant with blessings and favors on this day, favors him again and again; After banning eating and drinking during Ramadan, he ordered drinking again. Giving and receiving Fitrah, performing Hajj, and eating sacrificial meat, etc., he returned the servants repeatedly. It brings joy to people’s lives. Due to these reasons, this day is named Eid.

What is Eid ul Fitr?

Eid means joy; And the word Fitr means to break, to tear. Therefore, Eid-ul-Fitr means the joy of breaking the fast. Muslims start fasting at the sighting of the Ramadan moon and break the fast at the sighting of the Shawwal moon. It is called Eid-ul-Fitr, the joy of breaking the fast.

What is Eid ul Adha?

Eid and Adha are both Arabic words. Eid means joy, And that means achieving proximity. Therefore, Eid-ul-Azha means the joy of attaining closeness. The animal sacrificed on the day of Eid-ul-Azha to gain nearness to Allah is called Qurban in the Quran. In the hadith, instead of the word Qurban, the words Uzyah and Yahiya are used. Which means proximity. And the word Azhah comes from the words Uzhiyah and Yahiya. Eid-ul-Azha is named after the animals sacrificed for the purpose of attaining nearness to Allah, i.e. Uzhyah and Yahiya.

History of Eid

When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, migrated from Makkah to Madinah, the people of Madinah had two special days on which they used to play sports. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam asked what is the significance of these two days. The people of Medina replied that we have been playing sports on these two days since the Jahili era. Then the Holy Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Allah, the Lord of the worlds, has given you two better days than these two days.” And those days are two: Eid-ul-Azha and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Abu Dawud: 1134; Nasa’i: 1556

Is it obligatory to listen to the sermon of Eid?

The right rule to attend the Eid sermon is that it is Sunnah.

Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Sa’ib RA, he said, I attended the Eid with Rasulullah SAW; Then he finished the prayer and said, I will deliver the sermon; So whoever wants to sit to listen to the sermon, let him sit, and whoever wants to leave, let him leave.

Abu Dawood AL. Ha/1155 Imam Albani called this hadith Sahih.

How many Eid sermons?

Shaykh Muhammad Bin Uthaymeen (may Allah be pleased with him) said, Whoever looks at the hadiths compiled by Bukhari, Muslims, and others, it will be apparent to him that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave only one sermon (Eidul Fitr and Eid al-Azhar).

Ibn Abbas said:

I was present at the Eid prayer with the Prophet, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, who all used to offer the (Eid) prayer before the sermon.
