Dua for driving a vehicle in English. Dua before driving
Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, on the authority of Hazrat Ali Ibn Rabiyyah RA: He said, I saw Hazrat Ali RA, a four-legged animal was brought to him; That he may climb it. when he-
1. (In the beginning) he placed his foot on it (the four-legged animal) and said-
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ – Bismillah or in the name of Allah (beginning);
2. When he sat firmly in his vehicle (seat) he said:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ – Alhamdulillah or all praise is due to Allah;
3. Then (reciting this verse) he said:
سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱلَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقۡرِنِينَ
Pronunciation: Subhanallaji sakhkhara lana haja wa ma kunna lahu mooqrinin.
Meaning: Holy is that great being! Who has subjected them (all vehicles) to us. And we were not able to control them. (Surah Zukhruf: verse 13)
4. Then he said three times:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ Al-hamdulillahi; All praise is due to Allah.
5. Then he said three times:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَر : Allahu Akbar; God is great.
6. Then he said (this prayer)-
سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
Pronunciation : Subhanaka inni jalamtu nafsi fagfirli fainahu la yagfiruz junuba illa anta.
Meaning: How holy are you! Indeed I have wronged my own soul; So forgive me. Surely no one can forgive sins except You.
7. Then he (Hazrat Ali Radiyallahu Anhu) smiled.
It was said (asked to know) – O Amirul Muminin! What did (you) smile for?
He said – I saw the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. As he did; I did the same; Then (after reciting the supplication and Tasbeeh) he laughed. I said – O Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace! What did you smile for? He said-
Indeed your Lord is pleased with His servant when He says: “(O my Lord!) Forgive me my sins”. And the servant knows that no one can forgive sins except Allah.
Prayer to get into the vehicle hadith
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ عَلِيًّا – رضى الله عنه – وَأُتِيَ بِدَابَّةٍ لِيَرْكَبَهَا فَلَمَّا وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ فِي الرِّكَابِ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَلَمَّا اسْتَوَى عَلَى ظَهْرِهَا قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ { سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ * وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ } ثُمَّ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ . ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ . ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ . ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ . ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ فَقِيلَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ ضَحِكْتَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَعَلَ كَمَا فَعَلْتُ ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ ضَحِكْتَ قَالَ ” إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْجَبُ مِنْ عَبْدِهِ إِذَا قَالَ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ غَيْرِي ” .
On the authority of Ali ibn Rabi’ah (RA):
He said, I saw, when a mount was brought to Ali (RA), he stepped on its legs and said, ‘Bismillah’ and sat on its back and said, Al-Hamdulillah.” Then he recited this verse: “Subhanallaji sakhkhara lana haja wa ma kunna lahu muqbarinin.” That is, “Exalted is He, who made it our subject, we would not have been able to subdue it. Surely we must return to our Lord” (Surah Az-Zukhruf: Verses 13-14). Again he said ‘Al-Hamdulillah’ three times and ‘Allahu Akbar’ three times.
Then he said, “Subhanaka inni jalamtu nafsi fagfirli fainahu la yagfiruz junuba illa anta.” That is, “(O Allah!) I declare Your Holiness, I have wronged myself, forgive me, none can forgive sins except You”. Then he laughed. He was asked, O Ameerul Mu’minin! why did you smile He said: As I did, I saw the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) do it. When he laughed I asked, O Messenger of Allah! Why did you smile? He said: Surely your Lord is pleased with His servant when He says: “(O my Lord!) Forgive me my sins”. And the servant knows that no one can forgive sins except Allah.
