Sana Dua for namaz in English

Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, sana means praise. It is basically a supplication for the beginning of the prayer. Reading sana is Sunnah. After Takbeer Tahreema, with folded hands on the chest and looking at the place of Sijdah, the Musalli will begin his best Ibadah Salat by silently reciting any of the following supplications with a humble heart. But the first dua below is the purest.

Sana Dua No. 1

On the authority of Abu Huraira (ra): He said, Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) used to be silent for a while between tahrima and qira’at in takbeer. I said, O Messenger of God! May my parents bless you, what do you recite while remaining silent between takbeer and qira’at? He said: At this time I say-

Pronunciation: Allah-humma ba-‘id baini wa baina khatwa-ya-ya kama ba adta baynal mashrikki wal maghribi, Allah-humma naqqvini minal khatwa-ya kama yunaqqqach saobul ab yazu minad danas, alla-humma-ghasil khatwa-ya- Ya bima-i was salji wal baradi.

Meaning: O Allah! Make a gap between me and my sins as you have made a gap between the east and the west. O Allah cleanse me from my sins as a white cloth is cleansed from dirt. O Allah, wash away my sins with ice, water, and dew.

Quality of Hadith: Sahih Hadith

Bukhari 744.

Sana Dua No. 2

Narrated Aisha (RA): The Prophet (PBUH) used to start the prayer and say:

Meaning: O Allah! Describing Your holiness with Your praise. Blessed is your name forever, above all, your dignity above all, there is no god but you.

Tirmidhi 243, Ibn Majah 806, Mishkat 815.

Sana Dua No. 3

On the authority of Ali Ibn Abu Talib (RA): He said, Rasulullah (SAW) used to recite the following dua after saying Takbeer while standing in prayer-

Pronunciation: Wajjahtu wajhiya lillazi fatwaras samawati wal arda hanifaw wama ana minal mushrikeen. Zalamtu nafsi wa’taraftu bijambi fagfirli junubi jami’an. La yagfiruz junuba illa anta wahdini li-ahsanil akhlakb. La Yahdini li-ahsaniha illa anta wasrif ‘anni sayyiaha, la yasrifu sayyiaha illa anta. Labbaika wa sa’daika wa- khairu kulluhu fi yadaika, wash sharru laisa ilaika anabika wa ilaika tabaraqta wa ta’alaita astagfiruka wa atubu ilaika.

Meaning: I turn my face to the Great One who created the heavens and the earth and I am not of the polytheists. Indeed my prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are for Allah Rabbul Alamin. He has no partners, and for this, I am commanded and I belong to the Muslims. Allah, You are the king, there is no god but You. You are my master and I am your slave. I have wronged myself and I confess my guilt.

So forgive me all my sins. Verily, no one can forgive sins except You. You lead me to good character, no one can lead me to good feelings except you. Keep evil behavior away from me, none but you can keep it away. O, Allah! I am present to you and ready to obey your orders. All goodness is in Your hand and no evil belongs to You. I am established by Your help and to You, I shall return. You are the Beneficent, You are the Exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You.

Abu Dawood 760, Mishkat 813.
