Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, Today’s topic of discussion is the importance and significance of Zakat and the punishment for not paying Zakat.
Importance and Significance of Zakat
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. Deen is not complete without Zakat. Those who refuse Zakat will be killed. And those who deny the obligation of zakat will be considered infidels. This Zakat was made obligatory in the 2nd Hijri. Allah Ta’ala has mentioned many places in the Qur’an:
And establish prayer, pay zakat, and bow down with those who bow down. (Surah Baqarah: 43)
And those whose wealth includes certain rights for beggars and the destitute. (Surat al-Mayarij: 24-25)
Among these five pillars, the relationship between prayer and fasting is related to human physical exertion and mind, while Zakat and Hajj are also related to money. Zakat is especially obligatory for the rich or wealthy. In the hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
It will be accepted by those who are rich among them. And it will be distributed among those who are poor or needy. (Bukhari 1401)
Islam is a religion of equality and brotherhood. Islam does not like the accumulation of wealth in one’s hands. And Islam wants both the rich and the poor to live comfortably. Therefore the provision of Zakat has been introduced targeting the poor. Many hadiths about the special importance of Zakat have been preserved in the Hadith repository.
Abdullah bin Umar RA. It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I have been commanded to fight the people until they bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and to establish prayer and pay zakat. (Bukhari, Muslim)
On the authority of Zarir Ibn Abdullah, he said: We pledge our allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to establish prayer, pay zakat and seek the welfare of every Muslim. (Bukhari, Muslim)
Abu Saeed RA. Narrated, once the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, was admonishing us. After swearing three times, he said, “Whoever prays five times a day, fasts in Ramadan, pays zakat, and refrains from all kinds of sins, Allah will surely open the gates of Paradise for him and say, ‘Enter it safely.’ (Nasa’i: 2395)
Punishment for not paying Zakat
There has been news of severe punishment for those who do not pay Zakat.
Abu Huraira RA. It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
If any owner of gold or silver does not pay zakat on his wealth, Allah will heat his wealth in the fire of hell on the Day of Resurrection and will cut his back, sides, and forehead with it. And as soon as it cools down it will be reheated in the fire. He will be punished on a day which will be equal to fifty thousand years. And it will continue like this until the trial of the servant is over. Then he will see his destination either to heaven or to hell. (Muslim)
Abu Huraira RA. It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Whoever is given wealth by Allah but does not pay Zakat, his wealth will be turned into a poisonous snake with two eyes on the Day of Resurrection. Then the snake will be wrapped around his neck on the Day of Resurrection. The snake kept biting his mouth and kept saying, I am your wealth, I am your accumulated wealth. (Bukhari)
Narrated in Sunan al-Nasa’i, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
A person who does not pay Zakat will be brought on the Day of Resurrection with a flame by which his forehead and back will be scarred.
Buraida Ra. He said, The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:
For those who do not pay Zakat, Allah will make them suffer like famine. (right)
Zakat is not a mercy to the poor but his right; Which the rich person must earn. Because of this, Abu Bakr RA. He said, “Those who used to collect even a rope of a camel as zakat during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, and now if they refuse to pay zakat, I will declare war against them.” (Bukhari: 1312)
The meaning of his speech was to ensure the rights of people so that no one can deprive anyone of his rights.
