What is the importance of Taraweeh prayer in Ramadan

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim – Today we will discuss the importance and virtue of Taraweeh prayers. There are many verses in the Qur’an about the virtues and importance of Tarabi and some hadiths have been narrated.

The importance of Taraweeh prayer

God the Almighty said,

And stay awake for some part of the night with Quran recitation, it is extra for you. Hopefully, your Rabb will establish you in the acclaimed place.

Surah Bani Isra’il verse no 79.

In that verse, Allah Ta’ala has declared nafl for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who prayed in some part of the night. And so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to offer naafil prayers in Ramadaan and outside Ramadaan, that is, at night throughout the year. The night prayer in Ramadan is called Tarabeeh but the night prayer outside Ramadan is called Tahajjud.

Narrated from Aisha (R)

He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out in the middle of the night and prayed in the mosque, and a number of men prayed behind him. In the morning people talk about it, so people gather in large numbers. He prays and people pray with him. Then In the morning, they discussed the matter. So On the third night, the number of worshipers in the mosque increased.

Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out and prayed and the people prayed with him. On the fourth night, the worshiper did not congregate in the mosque, but he did not go out at night and went out for the Fajr prayer. Your (last night’s) position was not unknown to me, but I fear that this prayer will become obligatory upon you (because I did not go out) because you would be unable to perform it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) died and the matter remained as it was.

Virtues of Taraweeh prayer

Narrated from Abu Hurairah

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever stands in Taraweeh prayer in Ramadaan with faith in the hope of gaining thawab, his previous sins will be forgiven. The narrator of the hadith, Ibn Shihab (R) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away and this is how the matter of Tarabi was started. This was the case even during the caliphate of Abu Bakr (R) and in the early part of the caliphate of Umar (R).

Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 2009

Narrated by Amr bin Murrah Al-Juhani

He said: A man from the tribe of Quzaah came to the Messenger of Allah (sm) and said: O Messenger of Allah if I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and you are the Messenger of Allah, I pray five times in the month of Ramadan. I observe fasting, perform Tarabeeh prayers and pay Zakat, then what is your opinion about me? The Prophet (sm) said that the person who dies on it will be considered among the truthful and martyrs.

Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah Hadith No. 2212, Siam Chapter, Paragraph-244, Sahih Ibn Hibban Hadith No. 3436, Virtues of Ramadan, Sahih Targhib Hadith No. 749.

It is clear from these hadiths that Tarabi’s prayers have special virtues. And the Prophet (SM) himself used to offer Tarabi prayers and encourage the Companions. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed Taraaweeh with the Sahaabah for three days, but he feared that it might be made obligatory and that the Ummah would not be able to observe it. And the set was not forced. After the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the Companions started reciting it with the congregation because there was no chance of it becoming obligatory. Although Tarabi’s prayers are Nafr Ibadat, it has special virtues and importance. So we should perform Tarabi prayer in Ramadan.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the Tawfiq to understand and act properly. Allahumma Amin.
