Bismillahir Rahmani Rahim, today’s topic of discussion is the virtues and acts of the month of Muharram.
Virtues and acts of the month of Muharram
Muharram is an excellent blessed month. The first month of the Hijri year. It is one of the ‘Ashhur Hurum’ i.e. forbidden month four. Allah Ta’ala says about Ashhur Hurum, “Surely, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah, (from the day) He created the heavens and the earth.” Four of these are respected, this is the established religion. So do not wrong yourselves during these months. [Surah At-Tawbah, Verse: 36]
Abu Bakrah Radiyallahu Anhu narrates from the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, “A year is the sum of twelve months, four of which are the most honorable. The three successive ones are Zilqad, Zilhaj and Muharram and (the fourth is) Rajab between Jumadas Sani and Shaban”.
Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 2958
Among them, Muharram is called Muharram because it is highly respected.
Allah’s words “Do not wrong yourselves in this.” That is, do not commit any wrongdoing in these honorable months. Because the sin of wrongdoing and crime committed at this time is more and more serious than at other times.
Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radiyallahu Anhu said in the explanation “You do not wrong yourselves in this”, you do not engage in wrongdoing in any of these twelve months. Then he specifically specified four months from that. He honored them with great honor. He considered the crime committed among these as a very serious crime. And he declared the good deeds performed in it worthy of more reward.
Qatadah Radiyallahu Anhu said in the explanation “Do not oppress yourselves in it”, although oppression is a great wrong for all times but oppression done in Haram month four is more serious in terms of crime and sin than oppression done at other times. Allah Ta’ala can raise whomever He wants according to His will.
He said Almighty Allah has chosen the pure and the best from His creation; He chose some of the angels as messengers from similar people. Chose his dhikr from words. And selected the mosques from the land. He chose Ramadan and the honorable month of Chatushtay from among the months. He chose Friday from the days and Lailat al-Qadr from the nights. So honor those whom Allah has honored. And according to the wise men, everything is given due respect mainly by those things with which Allah has honored them.

Virtues of fasting in the month of Muharram
On the authority of Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “The best fast after Ramadan is the month of Allah’s Muharram (fasting of the month).”

Virtues of Ashura
On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, he said, “The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, came to Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura.” The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, What is this? It is a good day, they said. On this day, Allah saved Bani Israel from their enemies. So Musa (peace be upon him) observed the fast. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said I have more right than you to follow Musa (peace be upon him). Then he fasted and commanded to fast”.
Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 1865
As narrated by a Muslim, “It is a great day, on which Allah saved Musa (peace be upon him) and his people and drowned Pharaoh and his people.”
In another narration of Bukhari, “He said to his Companions, “You have more right than them in following Musa (peace be upon him). So observe the fast.”
The fast of Ashura was famous from the east and even in the Jahili period before the prophethood of the Prophet, it was practiced in the Arab society.
Imam Qurtubi. Said, Quraish probably relied on the previous Shari’at, such as Ibrahim Alaihis salam, regarding the fast of Ashura. It is narrated in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to observe the fast of Ashura in Makkah before he migrated to Madinah. After Hijrah, he saw the Jews of Medina celebrating this day. When he asked them about the reason, they replied as mentioned. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered the Companions to oppose the Jews regarding the celebration of Eid. For example, on the authority of Abu Musa Radiyallahu Anhu, he said, “The day of Ashura was accepted by the Jews as an Eid”.
In another narration by Muslims, “the people of Khaybar (Jews) “accepted the day of Ashura as an Eid. They make their wives wear their ornaments and badges on this day.” Then the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said, “Then observe the fast.”
The apparent reason why the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, commanded his companions to fast on this day was to oppose the Jews. Muslims will fast on the day they celebrate Eid and break their fast.

Virtues of fasting on Ashura
On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him, he said, “I have not seen the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, be more interested in fasting than I have been in fasting on the day of Ashura and the month of Ramadan.”

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I hope that Allah will forgive the sins of the previous year regarding fasting on the day of Ashura.”
Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1976
This is the great mercy of God to us. He forgives the sins of a whole year with just one day of fasting. Indeed Allah is the Great Giver.
How many fasts of Ashura?
It is Sunnah to fast on the ninth along with the tenth; So as not to resemble the Judeo-Christians. And this is the best that the Companions did after the death of the Holy Prophet.
1. On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abbas, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, fasts on Ashura, And instructed to keep. (Later) (the Companions) said: The Jews and Christians give great honor to this day. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi wa sallam said: “Allah wills when the next year comes; Then we will fast on the 9th as well. But the next year before Ashura came, Rasulullah SAW died.

2. On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abbas, he said: The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: If I live, I will fast on the ninth day.

3. On the authority of Ibn Abbas, he said: Fast the tenth along with the ninth.
