How to perform Ghusl? How to do Ghusl? Ghusl steps

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim, Respected Religious Muslim Brothers, and Sisters, Today I would like to discuss the rules of obligatory baths in Islam. I will discuss how the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to take an obligatory bath from Sahih Hadith, InshaAllah.

1. At first the Prophet (SAW) used to take a bath.

Narrated ‘Umar: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:

Every action depends on destiny. As is the intention, so is the fruit. For example, if a person migrates (leaving his homeland) for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then he will get it for the reason that he has migrated.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 1; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1906.

2. He used to start bathing by saying “Bismillah”. He used to start ablution just like that.

3. Both hands were washed three times up to the wrist.

Narrated by Ayesha Radiyallahu Anha, she said,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to wash both hands up to the wrists three times while bathing in Janabat. Then he would pour water in his left hand and clean the place of shame. Then he would perform ablution like the ablution of prayer. And then he would soak his fingers in water and play with the hair roots. After that, he used to pour three chillus of water on his head. Eventually, water would flow all over the body.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 246; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 318.

Narrated from Maymuna Radiyallahu Anha, he said,

When I gave water to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for the bath of Janabat, he washed his hands two or three times. Then he took water from the pot and cleaned his private parts with his left hand. Then he touched the ground and rubbed it well. And then he performed ablution like the ablution of prayer. However, the footsteps did not sound. He then poured three quarts of water on his head and washed his whole body thoroughly. Then he moved away from the place and washed his feet. Eventually, I took the towel to him but he didn’t accept it; Instead, he shook off the water with his hands.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 249, 264; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 318.

4. He used to clean his private parts by pouring water on his left hand.

Narrated from Maymunah Radiyallahu Anha, he said,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once washed his private parts by pouring water on his left hand.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 256.

5. The left hand was rubbed with holy soil or on the wall or washed well with water.

Narrated from Maymuna Radiyallahu Anha, he said,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once washed his private parts by pouring water on his left hand. Then he rubbed his hands on the floor or the wall.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 26, 274.

6. He used to perform ablution as thoroughly as the Azu of prayer or he used to wash it at the end of the bath without washing the feet during Azu. However, he did not massage his head while performing ablution.

Narrated from Maymuna Radiyallahu Anha, he said,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) washed both his hands two or three times. Then the porter did. Watered the nose. He washed his face and hands. Washed the head three times. Water has flowed all over the body. Then he left the place and moved to another place and washed his feet.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 256, 259, 265, 264, 26.

Narrated Aisha and Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to wash both hands three times (while taking a bath). He used to plow three times and give water to his nose. He used to wash his face and hands three times. But instead of massaging his head, he would pour water on his head.

Nasai, Hadith No. 422.

7. He used to wet his fingers with water and play with them.

So that the water reaches the hair follicles. Then he would take three quarts of water in both hands and pour it on his head. Water flowed first to the right side of the head then to the left side of the head and finally to the middle part of the head.

Narrated by Ayesha Radiyallahu Anha, she said,

That is when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wished to bathe the animals, he would ask them to bring a pot of water like a milking pot. Then he would take water in his hand and flow it first to the right side of the head and then to the left side. Again he would take water in both hands and pour it on his head.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 256; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 318.

Women do not have to open their braids during Janabat baths.

Narrated from Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), she said,

I said: O Messenger of Allah! I wear a braid well on my head. Does it have to be opened during Janabat’s bath? According to another description, it should be opened during Janabat and menstrual baths. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You do not have to open the braid. It is enough for you to pour three gallons of water on your head. Water will flow throughout the body again. That is why you will become holy. However, it is mustahabb to open the pigtail during the bath after menstruation.

Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 330.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded her to take a bath at the end of the season:

(O Ayesha!) You take off your pigtail and take a bath.

Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 648.

8. Water is used to flow all over the body. First, it flowed on the right side and then on the left side.

Narrated by Ayesha Radiyallahu Anha, she said,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) liked to start everything from the right side. Even wearing shoes, scratching the head, purifying, and so on.

In particular, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to wash the folds of his armpits, groin, and limbs well.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 18; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 28.

Narrated by Ayesha Radiyallahu Anha, she said,

If the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) wished to take a bath in Janabat, he would first wash his hands. Then he would pour water and wash his armpits and groin. Then he would clean both hands and rub them against the wall. Afterward, he used to perform ablution and pour water on his head.

Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 243.

If you need to rub it, do it.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) about the bath after menstruation, he said:

Plum leaves will purify very well with mixed water. Then pour water on the head and rub it very well.

Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 332.

9. He used to leave the previous place and go a little farther and wash both his feet.

However, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not dry his body with a towel after bathing. The hadith in this regard has already been mentioned.

No bathing in the open:

It is not advisable to take a bath in an open space but to take a bath inside the curtain.

Narrated by Umm Hani Radiyallahu Anha, she said,

I went to see the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the year of the conquest of Makkah. Then he was taking a bath and Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) covered him with a veil.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 260; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 336.

Narrated from Maymuna Radiyallahu Anha, he said,

I have covered the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with a veil. In this condition, he has taken a bath of Janabat.

Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 261; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 336.

The salat can be performed with the ablution of the bath:

It is possible to perform salat, recite the Qur’an, etc. with the ablution of the bath. You don’t have to do new ablution for this.

Narrated by Ayesha Radiyallahu Anha, she said,

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to perform two rak’ahs of Sunnah and Fajr prayers after taking a bath. But he did not perform new ablution after bathing.

Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 250; Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 106; Nasai, Hadith No. 253; Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 575.
