Sehri-and-Iftar-time

Sehri and Iftar time Ramadan 2023

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim; Sehri and Iftar time: Sehri is eaten from midnight to before Fajr. And it is mustahabb to eat Sehri at the last moment if there is no fear of Fajr.

Anas said that Zayd bin Thabit informed him that they had gone up with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to offer Sehri (Fajr) prayers. Anas said I asked, how much time was between eating Sehri and the call to prayer? Zayd replied, “As long as it takes to read fifty or sixty verses.”

The verses here will be considered middle-type verses. And it takes about 15/20 minutes to read 50/60 verses of this class. Therefore, it is sunnah to eat Sehri 15/20 minutes before Azan.

The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to break their fast very early (as soon as it was time) and eat Sehri very late. So Sehri should not be eaten before. He should not eat Sehri in the middle of the night and fall asleep. Because the Fajr prayers are missed. After falling asleep, his congregation ran away. Otherwise, if the time for prayers is gone and the sun rises and becomes conscious, then the prayer itself becomes Qaza. Nauzu Billahi Min Jalik. And surely this is a great calamity; So many fasting people are stuck. May Allah guide them, Amen.

Iftar time

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When the night comes from this side (eastern sky), when the day leaves from this side (western sky), and when the sun sets, then the fasting person breaks his fast.

Bukhari 1941, 1954, Md. 1100, 1101

So the thing to watch is the sunset; Not Azan. So if the fasting person sees with his own eyes that the sun has set but the muezzin has not yet called for prayers, then it is permissible for him to break his fast. Even that is urgent.

On the other hand, it is a Bidat to delay the call to prayer of the muezzins in a precautionary manner.

Needless to say, if the whole part of the circle of the sun disappears (sets) locally, the fasting person should break his fast at that time. At this time there is a red glow in the lower sky, but it is not visible.

One thing that needs to be said here on an urgent basis is that the pre-warning three-minute extension has been reduced to the schedule of Sehri and Iftar prescribed by the Islamic Foundation. It is not permissible to delay these three minutes as a precaution during Iftar because we have learned from Hadith that it is necessary to break Iftar early. There is no need to be three minutes late. This was reduced from three minutes to one minute but in a hurry. So we should break the fast at least one minute from there without delay for three minutes.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: People will stay on Mars as long as they hurry to break their fast.

Bukhari 1958, Muslim 1096

He said Deen will be victorious as long as people hurry to break their fast. Because Jews and Christians break they are fast late.

The practice of the Holy Prophet was to break the fast early. Abu Atbiyah said, Masruq and I came to Ayesha (R) and said, O mother of believers! One of the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) breaks his fast early and prays early, and the other breaks his fast late and prays late. He said, ‘Who among them breaks his fast early and prays early? We said, ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud). He said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to perform Iftar and prayers in such a hurry.”

Muslim 1099

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that the three works include the ideals of Prophethood; Breaking the fast early, eating Sehri late (at the last minute), and placing the right hand on the left hand in prayer.

As soon as the whole circle of the sun disappears, it is time for Iftar. And that time is before the Maghrib prayers. After Iftar prayers, the fasting person will eat the necessary food. Of course, if the food is ready, then the prayers will be offered after eating the food first.

As Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When dinner comes, eat it before the Maghrib prayer. And don’t rush to eat that food.

Bukhari 72, Muslim 558

But be careful to break the fast before the time! This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw a group of people (in a dream) hanging on their ankles with thick veins (tied), their armpits cut and torn, and blood flowing from their armpits. The Prophet (SM) said I said, who are they? They said They were they; Those who used to break their fast before the time came.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the Tawfiq to understand and act properly. Allahumma Amin.
